85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.

sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.

Colors a single GIF frame can hold
The limit comes from the color table in the GIF89a specification. Animated WebP has no such cap, which is the main thing to expect when converting.
Why animated WebP needs a GIF copy
Animated WebP is common on the web and in messaging apps. Sticker packs use it, and many sites send their short loops as WebP because the files are smaller than GIF. Saving one of those animations gives you a .webp file, and that is where the trouble begins.
Plenty of places that play GIFs without a second thought do not play animated WebP. Older email clients show a still frame or a broken image. Forum software, some chat platforms and many content management systems accept GIF uploads but reject WebP. Even some image viewers on desktop computers open only the first frame.
GIF has been around since 1987, and the 89a revision that animations rely on is dated 1990, so support for it is close to universal. Converting keeps the motion and makes the file playable wherever a GIF would be.
WebP animation versus GIF
WEBP
WebP image
Google's image format for the web, released in 2010. One file type covers both lossy photos and lossless graphics, and it can carry a transparent background or a short animation. Every current browser shows it, yet many desktop programs, print services and upload forms still turn it away.

- Animation
GIF
GIF image
CompuServe's 1987 format, best known today for looping reaction clips. Each frame uses a small fixed color palette and lossless compression, and one color can be marked fully transparent. Every browser and chat app plays it, though gradients look banded and long clips make heavy files.
- Lossless
- Transparency
- Animation
Why convertWebP to GIF keeps the motion but moves it into an older, less capable format: 256 colors per frame and hard-edged transparency. You accept larger, slightly grainier files in return for an animation that plays in every chat, forum and inbox. For a still frame without those limits, WebP to PNG is better.
Animated WebP stores frames in full 24-bit color with an 8-bit alpha channel, and it can use lossy or lossless compression. GIF stores every frame with a palette of up to 256 colors and lossless LZW compression. Cartoons, stickers and simple graphics with few colors convert very well. Video clips and gradients lose the most, because their thousands of shades have to be reduced.
To reduce the visible effect, the converter builds a palette for each frame and applies dithering, a fine pattern of dots that simulates the missing shades. From a normal viewing distance this looks much smoother than flat banding, though it does add some grain.
There is also a practical benefit for anyone collecting reaction clips: a GIF is a single, self-contained file that you can drop into almost any message box. You do not have to check first whether the app on the other side knows WebP.
Transparency and edges
Stickers are where the second difference shows. A WebP sticker usually has soft, partly transparent edges and sometimes a drop shadow. GIF can mark one palette color as transparent, which means a pixel is either fully visible or fully see-through. There is nothing in between.
The converter therefore decides pixel by pixel whether an edge is kept or dropped. On a white or light chat background the result looks clean. On a dark background a thin light fringe can appear where the soft edge used to blend in.
Before you convert a long or detailed clip
GIF is a poor fit for long, high-resolution animations. The files grow quickly and colors suffer. Consider these options first:
- Reduce the width under Resize output; half the width means a quarter of the pixels.
- Use a short loop rather than the whole clip.
- If the target accepts video, an MP4 plays more smoothly at a fraction of the size.
File size and sharing limits
Expect the GIF to be several times the size of the animated WebP. That is a property of the format, not of the converter, and it matters because chat apps and forums often cap GIF uploads. Smaller dimensions are the most effective fix, since GIF size grows with every pixel in every frame.
You can convert up to 20 files per batch, each up to 95 MB. The uploads are deleted right after processing and the GIFs 30 minutes later. For clips that start out as video rather than WebP, Video to GIF lets you trim and set the frame rate, and the Image Converter handles other still and animated targets.
If the sticker will be used on a dark theme, convert it with that in mind, and test the GIF on a dark background before you share it widely.
How to convert WebP to GIF
Add the animated WebP
Drop up to 20 WebP files on the box above, or press Choose Files. Still WebP images work too.
Leave GIF as the output
GIF is preset. Every frame and its timing are kept, so there is nothing else to set unless you want smaller dimensions under Resize output.
Convert and save

WebP to GIF questions
Does converting WebP to GIF keep the animation?
Yes. Every frame is copied with its delay, and the loop setting is kept, so the GIF plays at the same pace as the WebP.
Why do the colors look grainy after converting WebP to GIF?
Each GIF frame can use at most 256 colors. An animation with smooth gradients or photo content has far more, so the converter picks the best 256 per frame and dithers the rest, which shows as fine grain or banding.
Why is my GIF so much bigger than the animated WebP?
GIF uses a compression method from the late 1980s that works on palette colors only. WebP compresses animation far more efficiently. To bring the GIF down, reduce its width under Resize output.
What happens to the soft edges of a transparent WebP sticker in GIF?
GIF transparency is all or nothing: a pixel is either fully transparent or fully visible. Semi-transparent edges and shadows become solid or disappear, which can leave a thin fringe on dark backgrounds.
Can I convert a still WebP image to GIF?
Yes, you get a single-frame GIF. For still pictures PNG or JPG usually look better, since they are not limited to 256 colors.
Where do animated WebP files come from?
Messaging apps use them for stickers, and many websites serve short animations as WebP instead of GIF to save data. Saving such an animation gives you a .webp file.
