85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.

Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.

AVIF shows in today's browsers, but documents, slide decks and older devices still expect JPEG.
Where AVIF still does not fit
AVIF pictures usually come from the web. A site served the image as AVIF, you saved it, and now you want to use it somewhere else: in a report, a school presentation, a newsletter or an email to a relative. That is where AVIF runs into trouble, because the places pictures go after the browser are slower to change than the browser itself.
Office programs and online document editors decide on insert whether they understand an image, and AVIF is often missing. Email clients and messaging apps on older phones may show an empty frame. Even within browsers, versions from a few years ago, which are still common on work computers and older tablets, cannot decode it.
JPEG avoids all of that. It has been a standard since 1992 and is understood by every program that handles pictures at all, which makes it the dependable format for anything you hand to other people.

AVIF
AVIF image
An image format from the Alliance for Open Media, released in 2019 and built on the AV1 video codec. It supports lossy and lossless modes, transparency, animation and HDR. Current browsers display it, but many editors, operating system previews and upload forms are still catching up.

JPG
JPG photo
The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.

Why convertConverting AVIF to JPEG trades a smaller, more capable file for one that inserts into any document and displays on hardware from years before AVIF existed. Pick this page for content you share with others; for edits or cutouts, a lossless copy via AVIF to PNG is better.
The AVIF specification builds on the AV1 video codec and supports transparency, animation and HDR. JPEG supports none of those, but it does not need to for the pictures that go into a report or a slide: a still photo at good quality is exactly what JPEG was designed for.
The preset suits documents. Quality 85 keeps photos clean on screen and in print, and transparent areas are filled with white, which matches a normal page. On a dark slide, choose black or the slide color instead so the picture blends in.
Printing is another case. Office printers, photo kiosks and online print shops accept JPEG almost without exception, while support for AVIF in print workflows is rare. Converting before you print or order avoids a failed job.

AVIF to JPEG questions
Why won't my document editor insert an AVIF image?
Word processors, slide tools and many online editors check the image type when you insert a picture, and AVIF is often not on their list yet. A JPEG copy inserts like any photo.
Which older browsers and phones cannot show AVIF?
AVIF arrived in Chrome 85, Firefox 93, Safari 16.4 on Mac and Edge 121, and in Android 12. Anything older shows a broken image or nothing. JPEG works on all of them.
Why is the JPEG file name .jpg when I wanted JPEG?
JPEG is the format and .jpg is its standard extension. The file is a JPEG in every sense, and forms or programs that ask for JPEG accept it.
What does the white fill do for AVIF graphics?
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels in an AVIF graphic are painted white. On a white document page that looks seamless. Pick another color under Transparent areas for dark slides.
Can I convert several AVIF images for one document at once?
Yes, up to 20 files in a batch, each up to 95 MB. Download them all together and insert them into the document in one go.

Current releases show AVIF, but support began recently: Chrome 85, Firefox 93, Safari 16.4 on Mac, Edge 121 and Android 12. Sources: caniuse, Android media formats.
The table shows only the newest releases, where AVIF looks universal. The note underneath tells the real story: Edge, the default browser on Windows, added AVIF only in version 121 in 2024, and Android needs version 12 or later. Devices that do not update, such as older tablets, smart TVs and locked-down office computers, are often below those versions.
If you are not sure what your audience uses, JPEG is the answer that never fails. It costs a larger file, but documents and slide decks are rarely limited by a few hundred kilobytes.
Preparing pictures for documents
Pictures in documents are usually shown much smaller than their original size. Setting a width of around 1,600 pixels under Resize output keeps the document file light without visible loss, especially when you insert several images. For a printed report, keep the full size or a little more.
If the finished document needs to become a PDF, the pictures go along unchanged. To turn the converted images themselves into a PDF instead, Image to PDF does that in one step, and the Image Converter covers other targets.
Keep the original AVIF files if you saved them for a reason, such as a high-quality image that you might want to reuse on a website. The JPEG is the copy for sharing, and you can always make another one.
The picture looks paler than in the browser
Some AVIF files use wide or HDR color. The converter maps them to standard sRGB, which every document program expects; the result can look a little less vivid than on an HDR screen.
The inserted picture is huge
Web images can be several thousand pixels wide. Reduce the width under Resize output and convert again, or resize the picture inside the document.
Only one frame of an animation came through
JPEG holds a single image. For moving pictures in a slide deck, convert the AVIF to GIF instead.
