JPEG-only forms and email

Plenty of upload forms spell out exactly what they accept, and the list often reads JPEG, PNG or PDF. Visa and benefit portals, insurance claim forms and school systems tend to be written that way, and a WebP picture saved from a website simply fails the check. Converting to JPEG gets it through, and the .jpg extension the converter writes is the standard spelling of the same format.

Email is the other common reason. A WebP may display in your mail app but not in the recipient's, especially in older desktop clients and on work computers. JPEG previews inline almost everywhere. The line above lists the batch and file limits of this tool next to the attachment limits that Gmail and Outlook publish.

A third case is the photo printing kiosk or online print shop. Most of them list JPEG first, and some reject anything else. A WebP that went through this page prints like any camera picture, although for large prints you should raise the quality to 90 or more before converting.

WebP and JPEG in brief

WEBP

WebP image

Google's image format for the web, released in 2010. One file type covers both lossy photos and lossless graphics, and it can carry a transparent background or a short animation. Every current browser shows it, yet many desktop programs, print services and upload forms still turn it away.

  • Lossy or lossless
  • Transparency
  • Animation

JPG

JPG photo

The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.

  • Lossy
  • No transparency
  • Still images only

Why convertGoing from WebP to JPEG trades WebP's tighter compression for the one photo format that every mail client and upload form reads. This page leans toward small files, so it suits attachments; for print-quality copies use WebP to JPG at its higher default.

A JPEG of the same picture is usually larger than the WebP it came from, because WebP was designed to need fewer bytes for the same detail. The preset quality of 80 keeps that growth in check. At normal screen sizes most viewers will not see a difference from higher settings, but the files are clearly lighter.

Transparency is the one thing that cannot cross over. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with white. That suits documents and forms, which are usually white anyway. If a cutout needs to stay transparent, convert it to PNG instead.

Animated WebP files are reduced to their first frame, because a JPEG holds one still image. If you need every frame, switch Animated input to export each one as its own file. For an animation that keeps moving in an email, convert to GIF instead.

Making the files fit

Dimensions affect file size more than any other setting. A picture saved from a modern website can be 2,000 or 3,000 pixels wide, far more than an email preview or a form thumbnail shows. Setting the longest side to around 1,600 pixels under Resize output cuts the pixel count sharply and keeps the picture sharp on any screen.

If a form gives a fixed limit in kilobytes, convert first and then use Compress Image, which aims for a target size directly. For dimensions that a form spells out in pixels, Resize Image sets width and height exactly.

Keep in mind that each lossy save removes a little detail. If you will edit the picture after converting, do the editing on the WebP or on a PNG copy first, and make the JPEG the last step before you send it.

Privacy and file handling

Pictures you attach to forms often show documents, homes or people. The converter removes location and camera details from the JPEGs by default, so the files do not reveal where they were made. The color profile stays, so colors do not shift.

Uploaded WebP files are deleted once they are converted, and the JPEGs 30 minutes later. No account is needed and nothing is kept, which makes the tool safe to use on a shared or public computer as long as you clear the downloads afterwards.

Converting is also cleaner than the workaround many people try first, which is taking a screenshot of the WebP. A screenshot captures the screen resolution rather than the real picture, may include parts of the page around it and adds a second round of compression when it is saved.

For pictures that also need converting to other formats, the Image Converter takes the same batch with every output option open.

How to convert WebP to JPEG

  1. Upload the WebP files

Drop up to 20 WebP images on the box above, or press Choose Files.

  2. Keep the compact preset

JPEG at quality 80 is preset to keep attachments light. Raise it under Advanced settings if the pictures will be printed.

  3. Convert and attach

Press Convert to JPG, download the files and attach them to your message or form.

WebP to JPEG questions

Is a JPEG file the same as a JPG file?

Yes. JPEG is the format and .jpg and .jpeg are two spellings of its extension. Both are sent with the image/jpeg media type, so a form that asks for JPEG takes the .jpg files this page creates.

Why is quality 80 preset for WebP to JPEG here?

It keeps photos looking clean on screen while producing noticeably smaller files than quality 90 or above, which helps when several pictures share one email. For prints or archive copies, raise it to 85–95.

How many converted JPEGs fit in one email?

That depends on the pictures. Gmail allows 25 MB of attachments per message and Outlook sets 20 MB for internet email accounts. Add up the file sizes after conversion; if they are over, lower the quality or the dimensions.

What color fills transparent parts of a WebP turned into JPEG?

White, because JPEG has no transparency. You can choose black or a custom color under Transparent areas in Advanced settings.

Can I make the JPEG files smaller without lowering the quality?

Yes: reduce the dimensions. Set a longest side such as 1600 px under Resize output. Pictures shown in an email or on a form rarely need more, and the files get much lighter.
