Your iPhone photo stays the same picture. Only the container changes, from HEIC to the JPG format that every device reads.

Where HEIC photos cause trouble

An iPhone set to its default camera format saves each photo as HEIC, short for High Efficiency Image Container. Apple switched to it with iOS 11 because the files take less storage. On Apple devices you never notice: Photos, Messages and AirDrop all handle it. The problems start the moment a photo leaves that world.

Copy the pictures to a Windows laptop over a cable or a cloud folder and they may show as blank icons. Attach one to a job application, a rental portal or a school form and the upload is refused because the list of accepted types reads JPG, PNG, PDF. Send it to a relative with an older Android phone and the gallery app may not show it.

Converting to JPG solves all three cases at once. The result is an ordinary photo file, the same kind digital cameras have produced since the 1990s, and no app has to know what HEIC is.

A JPG is also the safer choice for anything you hand to a print shop or a photo kiosk. Many printing services list JPG as their preferred upload, and a kiosk in a pharmacy or supermarket may not recognize a HEIC file on a USB stick at all.

HEIC and JPG side by side

HEIC

HEIC photo

The HEIF container with HEVC-coded images, which iPhones and iPads use for camera photos. It keeps lossy photos smaller than JPG at similar detail and can also hold transparency, image sequences and Live Photo frames. Apple devices open it directly; Windows, older software and many websites often do not.

JPG

JPG photo

The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.

Why convertChoose JPG when an iPhone photo has to leave Apple devices: for Windows, Android, web forms and print kiosks. You give up some storage saving and get a file nobody turns away. If you plan to edit the picture further, HEIC to PNG avoids a second lossy save.

Under the hood, HEIC stores each photo with the HEVC video codec inside a HEIF container, defined in ISO/IEC 23008-12. That design is newer and more efficient than JPEG, but it also means a program needs a recent decoder to open it. JPEG needs none of that: the decoder has been built into operating systems, browsers and printers for decades.

Expect the JPG to be bigger than the HEIC you started with. The extra bytes do not add detail; they are the cost of the older compression method. If the size matters, for example for an email or an upload limit, lower the quality a little or use Compress Image afterwards.

Safari shows HEIC from version 17; Chrome, Edge and Firefox do not. On Android the HEIF decoder exists from Android 9 but phone makers may leave it out. Sources: caniuse, Android media formats.

The table explains why a photo can look fine on your phone and fail everywhere else. Browsers matter more than they seem, because most upload forms preview the picture in the browser before sending it. If the browser cannot decode HEIC, the form often rejects the file outright.

Windows can show HEIC with the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, but that fixes only your own PC. The person or system you send the photo to still needs JPG.

Settings this page starts with

Quality is set to 90 rather than the usual 85, because phone photos are often printed, cropped or zoomed. Auto orient is on, so a picture taken in portrait mode is written upright instead of relying on a rotation tag that some viewers ignore. Location and camera details are removed unless you choose to keep them.

If you would rather stop the problem at the source, Apple describes two switches in its HEIF support article: Camera > Formats > Most Compatible makes new photos JPG, and Photos > Keep Originals controls whether a cable transfer to a computer keeps HEIC. Both settings apply only from now on, which is where this converter fills the gap for the photos you already have.

Every photo in a batch gets the same settings. If some pictures need another format, the Image Converter page offers the full list of outputs, and Resize Image sets exact pixel dimensions for forms that ask for them.

Do

  • Convert the original HEIC from the phone or iCloud, not a screenshot of it, so you keep the full resolution.
  • Keep a copy of the HEIC files until you have checked the JPGs, especially for photos that matter.

Avoid

  • Renaming .heic to .jpg. The data stays HEIC and careful upload forms still reject it.
  • Converting the same photo to JPG again and again; each lossy save removes a little more detail.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Add the HEIC photos

Drop up to 20 .heic files on the box above, or press Choose Files and pick them from your photo library or a folder.

  2. Keep or change the quality

JPG at quality 90 is preset for camera photos. Lower it under Advanced settings only if the files must be smaller.

  3. Convert and save

Press Convert to JPG and download each photo, or all of them at once.

HEIC to JPG questions

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC instead of JPG?

Since iOS 11 the Camera app uses the High Efficiency setting by default, which stores photos as HEIF files with the .heic extension. They take less space than JPGs of similar quality. You can switch to JPG for future photos under Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.

Will converting HEIC to JPG rotate my photos the wrong way?

No. Auto orient is on, so the converter reads the orientation the camera recorded and writes the JPG upright. Portrait shots stay portrait on every screen.

Can I convert a Live Photo from HEIC to JPG?

You get the still frame that Photos shows as the main picture. The short video part of a Live Photo is stored separately and is not part of the JPG.

Does the JPG keep the date and location of the iPhone photo?

Location, camera model and other details are removed by default for privacy. If you need the date and place for sorting a photo library, untick Strip metadata under Advanced settings before converting.

Is the JPG lower quality than the original HEIC?

Both formats discard some detail to save space, so every conversion is a fresh lossy save. At quality 90 the difference is not visible at normal viewing sizes. The JPG file will usually be larger than the HEIC.

Can I convert HEIC photos on a Windows PC without installing anything?

Yes. The converter runs in the browser, so you only need the HEIC files on your PC. Upload them here and download the JPGs; nothing is installed and no account is needed.
