In short

  1. 1HEIF is a container: iPhones fill it with HEVC images and call the file .heic, while Android phones and cameras often use .heif or .hif.
  2. 2Camera HEIF files are frequently 10-bit and use wide or HDR color, which many viewers show wrongly.
  3. 3This page converts to JPG at quality 90 and maps the colors to sRGB, so the result looks the same everywhere.

Where .heif and .hif files come from

HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format. It was published by MPEG as ISO/IEC 23008-12 and is best known from the iPhone, which saves its photos as HEIC. HEIC is simply HEIF with HEVC-coded pictures inside, and the two extensions are often used for the same thing.

Outside Apple, HEIF shows up in two other places. Several Android phones offer a high-efficiency photo setting that saves pictures as .heif to save storage. And recent mirrorless cameras from Canon, Fujifilm and Sony can record 10-bit HEIF files with a .hif extension, as a lighter alternative to RAW that still holds more tonal range than JPEG.

Those camera files are the ones that confuse people most. They open on the camera's own screen and in the maker's software, then appear as unknown files, blank thumbnails or strangely flat images almost everywhere else.

HEIF and JPG compared

HEIC

HEIC photo

The HEIF container from MPEG, used for iPhone photos as .heic and by Android phones and mirrorless cameras as .heif or .hif. It stores lossy images more compactly than JPG and can hold 10-bit color, HDR, transparency and image sequences, but many apps and websites still cannot open it.

JPG

JPG photo

The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.

Why convertJPG gives up HEIF's 10-bit color and smaller files in exchange for a photo that every app, printer and website reads correctly. Convert when a camera or Android HEIF has to leave its own ecosystem; keep the originals if you may want to edit the extra tonal range later.

The main loss in this direction is bit depth. Baseline JPEG, as defined in ITU-T T.81, stores 8 bits per color channel. A 10-bit HEIF has four times as many steps per channel, which matters for heavy editing of shadows and skies, but not for looking at or printing a finished photo.

Files will usually grow, because JPEG compresses less efficiently than HEVC. Quality 90 is preset here because camera photos tend to be large and detailed, and they are often printed. If you need smaller files for sharing, move the slider down or set a smaller longest side under Resize output.

One format, several extensions: .heic from iPhones, .heif and .hif from other devices. Converted copies can be made with the Image Converter page.

The sheet shows why HEIF is more capable than JPG on paper: it can carry transparency, several images in one file and both lossy and lossless coding. In practice, phones and cameras use it for single lossy photos, sometimes with a depth map or a burst attached. The converter writes the main image, which is the picture you see in the gallery.

Support is the weak point. Safari shows HEIC images from version 17, but Chrome, Edge and Firefox do not, and Android leaves the decoder optional for phone makers. Windows needs an extra extension from the Microsoft Store. JPG has none of these gaps.

Getting the colors right

Camera HEIF files often record color in a wider space than the sRGB standard that screens and browsers assume, and some use an HDR curve. If a program ignores that information, the photo looks dull or grey. That is why Color space is preset to sRGB on this page: the converter translates the colors so the JPG looks the same in a browser, on a phone and at a print kiosk.

If you work in a color-managed editor and want the original space, choose Keep original under Advanced settings and leave Keep color profile ticked. The profile then travels with the JPG and the editor can read it. For editing with the full 10-bit range, a lossless target such as PNG is the better choice, and HEIC to PNG is set up for that.

The JPG looks darker than the HEIF on my camera screen

Camera screens show HDR HEIF files with extra brightness that a standard JPG cannot store. The sRGB version is the standard-range rendering of the same picture; brighten it in an editor if you prefer the look.

Some files in the batch failed

Check that they are real HEIF files and not short video clips. Cameras and phones sometimes save motion clips next to the photos, and those need a video tool instead.

The photos are sideways

Auto orient is on by default and turns pictures upright using the orientation the device recorded. If a file has no such tag, rotate it once in a photo viewer or editor before converting.

How to convert HEIF to JPG

  1. Add the HEIF files

Drop up to 20 files ending in .heif, .hif or .heic on the box above, or press Choose Files.

  2. Check color and quality

JPG at quality 90 in sRGB is preset. Under Advanced settings you can keep the original color space instead, for a print workflow that manages color.

  3. Convert and save

Press Convert to JPG and download the photos one at a time or together.

HEIF to JPG questions

What is the difference between HEIF and HEIC files?

HEIF is the container format; HEIC is the name for HEIF files whose images are coded with HEVC, which is what iPhones save. A .heif file may use HEVC or another codec. The converter reads both extensions, plus the .hif files that cameras write.

Why do HEIF photos from my camera look washed out on my computer?

Camera HEIF files often hold 10-bit images in a wide or HDR color space. A viewer that does not understand that color data shows flat, grey-looking pictures. Converting with Color space set to sRGB maps the colors to the range every screen and browser expects.

Does a 10-bit HEIF become an 8-bit JPG?

Yes. Baseline JPEG stores 8 bits per color channel, so the extra tonal steps of a 10-bit file are reduced. For normal viewing and printing this is not visible; if you need the full depth for editing, convert to PNG or TIFF instead.

Can I convert .hif files from a Canon, Fujifilm or Sony camera?

Yes. Cameras use the .hif extension for the same HEIF container. Add the files as they come off the memory card; renaming is not necessary.

Why do my Android HEIF photos not open on other phones?

HEIF decoding is part of Android from version 9, but phone makers may leave it out, and many apps never added it. A JPG copy avoids the question for whoever receives the photo.

Will the JPG copy keep the camera settings stored in the HEIF?

Only if you ask for it. Details such as exposure, lens and GPS position are removed by default. Untick Strip metadata under Advanced settings to keep them in the JPG.
