85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.

- JFIF
- Also called JPEG File Interchange Format · .jfif · .jfi
- The file layout used by most JPEG photos, standardized by the ITU as T.871. A .jfif file is a JPEG photo with a less familiar extension; converting gives it the .jpg name every app expects.
How .jfif files end up on your computer
Most people meet JFIF the same way: they right-click a picture on a website, choose Save image as, and the file lands in Downloads as something.jfif. Nothing went wrong with the picture. On some Windows setups, the system maps the image/jpeg media type to the .jfif extension, and browsers use that mapping to name the file.
The data inside is an ordinary JPEG. JFIF, short for JPEG File Interchange Format, is the small header that tells software how to read the compressed image, and nearly every .jpg on the web uses it. Calling the file .jfif is technically correct, just uncommon.
Uncommon is the problem. Photo viewers, editors and especially upload forms often recognize only .jpg and .jpeg. A .jfif file may not show a thumbnail, may not open by double-clicking, and may be rejected outright by a job portal or a school form.
Converting once fixes all three, and the copies keep the same pixels, so there is no reason to save the picture again from the website.
JFIF and JPG compared
JFIF
JFIF image
A JPEG file that carries the .jfif extension, usually because a browser saved it that way. The image data is ordinary lossy JPEG with no transparency or animation, so only the name differs. Some upload forms and older viewers reject the extension even though they accept the same picture as .jpg.
- Lossy
- No transparency
- Still images only
JPG
JPG photo
The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.
- Lossy
- No transparency
- Still images only
Why convertJFIF to JPG changes the name a system recognizes, not the kind of picture: a .jfif download becomes a .jpg file every form and photo app accepts. Use it when the extension is what blocks you; if you need a lossless copy for editing, JFIF to PNG is the better target.
Since both sides are JPEG, colors, dimensions and sharpness stay the same. The converter still decodes and re-encodes the picture, which is why quality 95 is preset here rather than the usual 85: it keeps the new save visually identical to the download.
Converting rather than renaming has one advantage. If a file was saved as .jfif but is actually a WebP or another format, which happens with some sites, the converter writes a true JPEG. A renamed file would keep the wrong data under the new name.

The same media type as JPG, which is why browsers can save either. Need other formats? The Image Converter takes .jfif files too.
The sheet shows the key point: JFIF uses the image/jpeg media type, the same as .jpg and .jpeg. There is no transparency and no animation, just one lossy still image. So nothing is lost in the move to .jpg apart from the tiny effect of one more JPEG save.
JFIF also records basic information such as pixel density, and many files carry EXIF camera data next to it. Location and camera details are removed during conversion by default; untick Strip metadata under Advanced settings if you want to keep them.
Browsers read JFIF without any trouble, so a .jfif picture always displays on a web page. The difficulty is purely with software and forms that decide by file name. That is why converting, or renaming when you are sure of the content, solves nearly every case.
Fixing common JFIF problems
The table below pairs the messages people see with the fix. In most cases a converted .jpg solves the problem in one step, and a batch of 20 files handles a full Downloads folder quickly. If the forms you use also set a size limit, the Compress Image tool reduces the JPGs to a target size afterwards.
After converting, check one file by opening it in your usual photo app and uploading it once. If it passes, the rest of the batch will too, because every file is written the same way.
- What you see: File type not allowed when uploading a .jfif picture
- What to do: Convert to JPG here; the form sees a .jpg with real JPEG data.
- What you see: The photo app shows no preview for .jfif files
- What to do: Convert the batch, or open the files in a browser, which reads JFIF directly.
- What you see: A renamed .jpg still fails to upload
- What to do: The file may not be JPEG inside. Converting reads the real format and writes a genuine JPG.
- What you see: Print service rejects the order
- What to do: Most print services list JPG first. Convert at the preset quality 95 so prints stay sharp.

JFIF to JPG questions
What is a JFIF file?
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the standard wrapper that most JPEG photos use, published by the ITU as T.871. A .jfif file is a normal JPEG photo with an unusual extension.
Why does my browser save images as .jfif instead of .jpg?
On some Windows computers a system setting links the JPEG media type to the .jfif extension, and browsers follow it when naming downloads. The picture is still a JPEG; only the name is unusual.
Can I rename a .jfif file to .jpg?
Usually, yes, since the data is JPEG. If you have a whole folder, or a form still refuses the renamed files, converting writes clean .jpg files in one batch.
Does converting JFIF to JPG lower the image quality?
Only very slightly. The picture is saved again as JPEG at quality 95, a level where no difference is visible. Renaming avoids the save entirely if that is enough for your purpose.
Why does an upload form reject my JFIF picture?
Many forms compare the extension with a list such as .jpg, .jpeg and .png. .jfif is rarely on it, even though the data is identical. A .jpg copy passes the check.
Can I stop Windows from saving new downloads as .jfif?
The behavior comes from a registry setting for the image/jpeg type, and changing it needs care. Converting or renaming the files you already have is the safer quick fix.
