2011

Year the ITU published JFIF as Recommendation T.871

JFIF had been the common JPEG wrapper since the early 1990s; ITU-T T.871 made it a formal standard. Its data is JPEG, which is why converting it to PNG keeps the picture exactly as it appears.

From web download to working file

A .jfif file is usually a picture someone saved from a website on a Windows computer. The format is plain JPEG with the JPEG File Interchange Format header, but the unusual extension trips up software. Design tools, slide programs and some editors do not list .jfif in their import dialogs, so the picture you want to use seems to be unsupported.

PNG is the opposite: every editor, slide tool, document program and web builder reads it. Converting a JFIF to PNG gives you a file that drops into a project without trouble, and because PNG is lossless, it stays exactly as it is through every later edit and save.

This makes PNG the right choice when the picture is raw material rather than a finished photo. A product image you will cut out, a chart you will annotate, a meme template you will add text to, or a background you will crop for a slide all belong in this group.

JFIF compared with PNG

JFIF

JFIF image

A JPEG file that carries the .jfif extension, usually because a browser saved it that way. The image data is ordinary lossy JPEG with no transparency or animation, so only the name differs. Some upload forms and older viewers reject the extension even though they accept the same picture as .jpg.

  • Lossy
  • No transparency
  • Still images only

PNG

PNG image

An open raster format the PNG Development Group published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Compression is lossless and a full alpha channel keeps soft edges and cutouts clean. It suits screenshots, logos and interface graphics; photos come out much larger than as JPG.

  • Lossless
  • Transparency
  • Still images only

Why convertJFIF to PNG turns a lossy web download into a lossless working copy that design and slide tools import without complaint. You pay with a larger file and gain edits that never degrade. If you only need the extension fixed for an upload, JFIF to JPG keeps the file small.

The JFIF side carries JPEG's strengths and limits: small files, one still image, no transparency. The PNG side stores every pixel without loss, supports a full alpha channel and is a W3C standard that has not changed in ways that break old files since 1996.

The conversion copies the decoded picture exactly. It does not clean up JPEG artifacts, and it does not invent transparency. What it does guarantee is that nothing more is lost from now on, which a JPG cannot promise once you start editing.

Because JFIF and JPG are the same data, there is no format-specific damage to worry about. Everything said about converting a JPG to PNG applies here too: the PNG matches the picture you saw in the browser, and it simply stops losing quality from this point on.

How to convert JFIF to PNG

  1. Choose your .jfif files

Drop up to 20 JFIF images on the box above, or press Choose Files and pick them from Downloads.

  2. Leave PNG as the output

PNG is preset and lossless, so there is no quality to set. Use Resize output under Advanced settings for smaller dimensions.

  3. Convert and save

Press Convert to PNG and download the files.

JFIF to PNG questions

Why convert JFIF to PNG rather than to JPG?

Choose PNG when you will edit the picture, add text or place it in a design, because PNG does not lose detail on later saves. Choose JPG when you only need to upload or share it, since the file stays small.

Will a JFIF converted to PNG get a transparent background?

No. JFIF is JPEG data and has no transparency, so the PNG starts opaque. You can remove the background afterwards in an editor, and the PNG can store the result.

Why is the PNG larger than the .jfif file?

JFIF uses lossy JPEG compression, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. Lossless storage needs more bytes, especially for photos. The picture looks the same; it is simply stored without further loss.

Can Google Slides, PowerPoint and Canva use the PNG?

Yes. PNG is accepted by all major slide, document and design tools, which is often the point of converting a .jfif download that they do not list.

Do I lose quality converting JFIF to PNG?

No further quality is lost. The PNG reproduces the decoded JFIF picture pixel for pixel. Any compression blur that was already in the download stays, because it cannot be undone.

Preparing pictures for slides and designs

Slides and posters often use images much smaller than the original download. If the JFIF is very large, set a width or longest side under Resize output before converting. A smaller PNG is lighter for the slide file and quicker to move around, and resizing on the way in avoids a second lossy step later.

Color profiles are kept, so the colors you saw in the browser are the ones you get in the PNG. Location and camera details, which web downloads seldom have anyway, are removed by default.

For pictures that should become a cutout, convert to PNG first and then remove the background in your editor. The PNG can hold the transparent result, which a JPG or JFIF never could.

Text you add to a picture benefits most. Labels, arrows and captions placed on a PNG stay sharp through every save, while the same additions on a JPG pick up faint noise each time the file is compressed again.

Limits and file handling

Each file can be up to 95 MB, which is far more than a normal web picture. Uploads are deleted as soon as the PNGs are ready, and the PNGs are removed 30 minutes later, so download them before closing the page. No account is needed.

If your project needs the pictures in another form, the Image Converter offers WebP, AVIF, TIFF and more from the same files. For pictures that must become one document instead, the Image to PDF tool combines them into a single file.

Already have the PNGs but need them lighter for email? Run them through Compress Image, which keeps PNG output when you ask it to.
