Should I convert my JPG to PNG?

Yes, if you are about to edit, cut out or add text to the picture. For simply sharing a photo, the JPG is already the better file.

Reasons to turn a JPG into a PNG

JPG is excellent for storing and sharing photos, but it is a lossy format. Every time an editor saves a JPG, it compresses the whole picture again and discards a little more detail. One save is invisible. Ten rounds of edits, crops and saves leave soft edges, blotchy skies and halos around text.

Converting to PNG at the start of a project stops that. PNG is lossless, so you can open, change and save the file as often as you like and the untouched parts stay exactly as they were. Designers do this before placing a photo in a layout, and teachers and students do it before adding labels or arrows to a picture.

The other common reason is transparency. A JPG cannot have a see-through background, but a PNG can. If you plan to remove the background of a product shot or a portrait, a PNG is the format that can hold the result.

JPG versus PNG

JPG

JPG photo

The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.

  • Lossy
  • No transparency
  • Still images only

PNG

PNG image

An open raster format the PNG Development Group published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Compression is lossless and a full alpha channel keeps soft edges and cutouts clean. It suits screenshots, logos and interface graphics; photos come out much larger than as JPG.

  • Lossless
  • Transparency
  • Still images only

Why convertJPG to PNG is the editing direction: the file gets bigger, but it stops losing quality and gains room for transparency. Choose it for working copies, cutouts and annotated images. To go back to a small file for sharing at the end, use PNG to JPG.

The conversion itself is exact. The decoder reads the JPG into pixels, and PNG writes those pixels with no further compression loss. Any blur or block pattern the JPG already had is copied faithfully, because there is no way to recover information the JPEG encoder threw away.

File size grows, often by several times for a camera photo. That is the cost of lossless storage, and it is why PNG is a working format here, not a sharing format. If a JPG came from a website as .jpeg or .jfif, the result is the same: all of these extensions hold JPEG data.

Text and line work are a third case. Captions, arrows, highlight boxes and screenshots pasted into a photo all have hard edges, and JPG compression leaves faint noise around them. In a PNG those additions stay clean, which matters for slides, tutorials and printed handouts.

PNG was created in the mid-1990s as a patent-free replacement for GIF and has been standardized by the W3C, the IETF and ISO since then. Its third edition from 2025 added official support for HDR color and animated PNG, while staying readable by older software.

That long record makes PNG a safe format for files you will keep. A PNG master copy of an edited image will open in practically any program for many years, and you can always export a JPG from it whenever you need a small file.

Colors stay the same as well. The embedded color profile is copied into the PNG, so an image prepared on a wide-gamut screen does not shift when it opens in another editor. Orientation is applied, so photos taken in portrait mode open upright.

Getting the most out of the PNG

Convert from the best JPG you have. A photo straight from the camera or phone holds more detail than a copy that has been sent through a messaging app, which recompresses images to save data. Starting from the original gives the PNG more to preserve.

If the PNG is too large for your editor or the project does not need full resolution, set a width or longest side under Resize output. For square app or website icons, JPG to ICO builds the icon file directly, and the Image Converter covers every other target.

Uploads are deleted once the PNGs are written, and the PNGs 30 minutes later, so save them straight into your project folder.

Do

  • Convert to PNG before you edit, annotate or remove a background.
  • Export a final JPG from the PNG when you need a small file to send.

Avoid

  • Converting to PNG to fix blur or blockiness; the damage is already in the pixels.
  • Uploading large PNG photos where a JPG would do, such as social posts and email.

JPG to PNG questions

Does converting JPG to PNG make the image sharper?

No. The PNG shows exactly what the JPG shows, including any compression blur. What changes is that the picture stops losing detail each time you edit and save it.

Will the PNG have a transparent background after converting from JPG?

Not by itself. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts fully opaque. PNG lets you add transparency afterwards, for example by removing the background in an editor.

Why is the PNG several times bigger than my JPG?

PNG stores every pixel without loss, and the fine texture in a photo packs poorly that way. The extra bytes preserve the current pixels exactly; they do not add new detail.

Do I need PNG to upload a picture to a website?

Usually not. Most sites take JPG for photos. Convert to PNG when a site or app asks for it specifically, or when the image is a graphic, logo or screenshot.

Can I convert .jpeg files on this JPG to PNG page?

Yes. .jpeg, .jpg, .jpe and .jfif are all the same JPEG format, and the converter accepts every one of them.

Does JPG to PNG keep the camera details of the photo?

Location and camera data are removed by default; the color profile is kept. Untick Strip metadata under Advanced settings to carry the EXIF details over.
