Year PNG 1.0 became a W3C Recommendation

PNG was designed as a lossless, patent-free format and is still maintained by the W3C. Three decades of support make it the safe common ground for images from any source.

Why gather everything as PNG

The list above shows how many formats can arrive in one project: web images in WebP and AVIF, phone photos in HEIC, design files in PSD and SVG, game textures in TGA and DDS, scans in TIFF and camera files in RAW. Each needs its own software, and few programs open all of them.

PNG is the format almost every program opens. Editors, slide tools, office suites, page builders and browsers all read it. Converting a mixed set to PNG gives you files that work in whatever tool comes next, without checking each one.

Unlike JPG, PNG keeps the details that matter for graphics. Transparent backgrounds stay transparent, sharp edges and text stay sharp, and no further detail is lost when you save again.

Converting once at the start also saves trouble later. When a project collects images from many people, a single format means the same import settings, the same preview behavior and no files that refuse to open on someone else's computer.

What lossless means in practice

PNG compresses the pixel data in a way that can be reversed exactly. That is the property that makes it useful as a working format, and it is easy to misunderstand, so the definition below is worth a moment.

Lossless compression
Also called reversible compression
Storing an image in fewer bytes in a way that decodes to exactly the same pixels. PNG works this way, so a PNG saved ten times is identical to the first save. It cannot restore detail a lossy source such as JPG has already discarded.

In practice this means two things. A PNG converted from a lossless source, such as BMP, GIF, TIFF or a lossless WebP, is a perfect copy. A PNG converted from a lossy source, such as JPG, HEIC, AVIF or lossy WebP, is a perfect copy of the already compressed picture, including its small flaws.

Either way, the PNG will not lose anything more. That is why designers convert to PNG before editing and export to a lossy format only at the end, when the work is done.

Special cases among the sources

Some sources need a word of explanation. Layered PSD files become one flattened PNG of the visible image. SVG and EPS drawings are rendered to pixels at their own size, or at the width you set under Resize output, so set a generous width for logos. Animated GIF and WebP give their first frame, or every frame if you choose.

Camera RAW files are developed with neutral settings. For control over exposure and white balance, use a RAW editor first. High-bit sources such as 16-bit TIFF and EXR can keep more than 8 bits per channel, since PNG supports up to 16.

For a single, well-known source there are pages with tuned settings, such as the SVG to PNG tool for rendering at a set width and WebP to PNG for web graphics.

Uncompressed sources are the exception to the size rule. A BMP or an uncompressed TIFF stores every pixel without packing, so the PNG made from it is usually smaller while staying identical. Scanned documents and old screenshots often fall into this group.

Batches, size and privacy

A batch holds up to 20 files of up to 95 MB each. PNG files from photos are large, so convert to PNG only the images you will edit or that need transparency, and use Image to JPG for the rest.

Location and camera details are removed by default, and color profiles are kept. Uploads are deleted as soon as they are converted, and the PNGs 30 minutes later. For more targets from the same files, open the Image Converter page.

If a source has a color profile, it is copied into the PNG, so wide-gamut images keep their colors in editors that read profiles.

No account is needed, and the same page works on phones and tablets, so you can collect files from a phone gallery and convert them without moving them to a computer first.

How to convert an image to PNG

  1. Add images of any type

Drop up to 20 files on the box above, or press Choose Files. Different formats can share one batch.

  2. Keep PNG selected

PNG is preset and lossless, so there is no quality to set. Use Resize output under Advanced settings if you want smaller dimensions.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to PNG and save the results.

Image to PNG questions

Which formats can be converted to PNG on this page?

Every format the box lists: JPG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO, PSD, SVG, EPS, TGA, DDS, EXR, JPEG 2000, JPEG XL and camera RAW files, among others. You can mix them in one batch.

Does converting an image to PNG keep transparency?

Yes, whenever the source has it. WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, PSD, SVG and ICO files can all carry transparency, and the PNG keeps it. JPG and RAW sources are opaque, so their PNGs are too.

Is PNG always bigger than the original image?

For photos from lossy formats such as JPG, HEIC, WebP and AVIF, yes, often by several times. For BMP and uncompressed TIFF the PNG is usually smaller, because PNG compresses without loss while those store raw pixels.

What happens to animated GIF or WebP files converted to PNG?

You get the first frame as a PNG by default. Choose Export every frame under Animated input to save each frame as its own PNG.

When is PNG the wrong choice for my images?

For photos you only want to share or upload, JPG is much smaller and accepted everywhere. PNG pays off for graphics, screenshots, cutouts and files you will edit repeatedly.
