AVIF
Also called AV1 Image File Format · .avif · image/avif
An image format from the Alliance for Open Media that stores pictures with the AV1 video codec inside a HEIF container, specified in AVIF 1.0.0. It is very efficient, but many apps outside the browser still cannot open it.

Why AVIF files are hard to use

More and more websites deliver their pictures as AVIF. The format can store a photo in noticeably fewer bytes than JPEG or even WebP, so pages load faster. Image services and content networks often pick it automatically when your browser says it can display AVIF. Saving a picture from such a page leaves you with a .avif file.

Inside the browser, everything works. Outside it, the picture may show up as a blank thumbnail, refuse to open in the photo viewer, or be missing from an editor's list of supported formats. Upload forms are stricter still: very few list AVIF among the file types they accept.

JPG has none of these problems. It is the oldest and most widely supported photo format, and converting gives you a file that behaves like any other photo on your device.

AVIF and JPG compared

AVIF

AVIF image

An image format from the Alliance for Open Media, released in 2019 and built on the AV1 video codec. It supports lossy and lossless modes, transparency, animation and HDR. Current browsers display it, but many editors, operating system previews and upload forms are still catching up.

  • Lossy or lossless
  • Transparency
  • Animation

JPG

JPG photo

The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.

  • Lossy
  • No transparency
  • Still images only

Why convertAVIF to JPG gives up the newest compression, transparency and HDR color for the one photo format that every app, printer and upload form already reads. Convert when a saved web picture has to work outside the browser; if it has a transparent background you want to keep, AVIF to PNG is the better target.

AVIF is far more capable on paper. It supports lossy and lossless coding, transparency, animation, 10- and 12-bit color and HDR. JPEG, standardized in 1992 as ITU-T T.81, stores a single 8-bit still image without transparency. For an ordinary photo shown on a normal screen, that difference is invisible.

The two cases that do change are transparency, filled with white unless you choose another color, and wide-color or HDR pictures. Color space is preset to sRGB on this page, so those images are mapped to the standard color range that every screen and printer assumes, instead of looking dull in programs that ignore the AVIF color data.

Renaming the file does not help. A .avif renamed to .jpg still holds AV1 data, and any program that checks the content, which includes most upload forms, will reject it or fail to show it. Only a real conversion produces a JPEG.

When browsers learned AVIF

  • 85Chrome version that added AVIF, in 2020caniuse
  • 93Firefox version that added AVIF, in 2021caniuse
  • 16.4Safari version on Mac with full AVIF supportcaniuse
  • 121Edge version that added AVIF, in 2024caniuse

The figures show how quickly browsers adopted AVIF once its specification appeared in 2019: Chrome in 2020, Firefox in 2021, Safari on the Mac with version 16.4, and Edge, the default browser on Windows, only in 2024. That speed is why websites could switch so soon. Desktop software, operating system previews and server-side systems move much more slowly, so the gap between where AVIF displays and where it can be used is still wide.

Browser support numbers change every month; caniuse tracks the current state. For anything that leaves the browser, such as an attachment, a print order or a form upload, JPG remains the safe choice.

What to expect from each AVIF file

Most AVIF files you save from websites are ordinary photos and convert without any decisions. Graphics with transparency and animated AVIF files behave differently, and the panels below show what happens to each kind. All files in one batch of up to 20 get the same settings.

Uploads are removed right after conversion and the JPGs 30 minutes later. If the converted files must meet a size limit, the Compress Image tool brings them down to a target size.

Converting also helps when you share a picture with someone whose device you do not know. A JPG attachment previews in every mail client and chat app, while an AVIF may arrive as an unknown file that the recipient has to look up.

A normal AVIF photo becomes a JPG that looks the same at quality 85.

  • File size grows, detail does not
  • Colors mapped to sRGB
  • Location and camera data removed by default

AVIF to JPG questions

Why can't I open an AVIF file on my computer?

AVIF is young: its specification dates from 2019, and while current browsers display it, many photo viewers, editors and office programs have not added a decoder yet. A JPG copy opens in all of them.

Why are AVIF images saved from websites at all?

Sites serve AVIF because it delivers the same picture in fewer bytes than older formats, which makes pages load faster. When you save the image, you get the format the site sent.

Will the JPG look different from the AVIF picture?

At quality 85 a normal photo looks the same. Two cases can differ: transparent areas are filled with white, and HDR or wide-color AVIF images are mapped to standard sRGB colors, which can look slightly less vivid.

Why is the JPG file larger than the AVIF?

AVIF uses the AV1 video codec and is one of the most efficient image formats available. JPEG needs more bytes for the same detail, so the converted file grows. Lower the quality or the dimensions if size matters.

What happens to an animated AVIF converted to JPG?

JPG holds one image, so the first frame is used by default. You can also export every frame as its own JPG under Advanced settings, or convert to GIF to keep the motion.

Can I convert AVIF to JPG on my phone?

Yes. The page works in mobile browsers. Pick the AVIF files from your downloads, convert them, and the JPGs save like any other download.
