In short

  1. 1VTF is the texture format of Valve's Source engine, used for sprays, skins and map textures.
  2. 2Resize the PNG to power-of-two sides, such as 256 × 256 or 512 × 512, before converting.
  3. 3The PNG's transparency is kept in the VTF's alpha channel.

Why Source games need VTF

Games built on Valve's Source engine do not read PNG or JPG textures. They load VTF files, a format Valve designed for its engine and documents on the Valve Developer Community. Everything from a custom spray to a new skin for a map prop has to be a VTF before the game will show it.

Modders usually create their artwork in a normal editor and save it as PNG, because PNG keeps transparency and every pixel. The last step is turning that PNG into a VTF. Traditionally that meant installing a converter or a plugin for an image editor. This page does the conversion in the browser instead.

The workflow is short: prepare the image, convert it here, then copy the VTF into the right folder of the game or the mod you are building.

PNG and VTF compared

PNG

PNG image

An open raster format the PNG Development Group published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Compression is lossless and a full alpha channel keeps soft edges and cutouts clean. It suits screenshots, logos and interface graphics; photos come out much larger than as JPG.

VTF

VTF texture

Valve's texture format for games on the Source engine, first used in 2004. A file can store compressed or uncompressed pixels, an alpha channel and several animation frames, along with mipmaps. Modders create VTF files for sprays, skins and maps, and general image apps need a plugin to read them.

Why convertPNG to VTF moves finished artwork from a format editors understand into the one the Source engine loads, keeping the alpha channel for sprays and decals. Plan the size first, because textures want power-of-two sides. If the artwork starts as an animated GIF, export its frames with GIF to PNG first.

PNG is a general image format: one lossless picture at any size, with optional transparency. VTF is built for real-time rendering. Besides the image itself, it can hold smaller pre-scaled copies called mipmaps, which the engine uses for distant surfaces, and several frames for animated textures.

The pixels and transparency of your PNG carry over. What changes is how they are packed: game textures are often stored with GPU-friendly compression so they load quickly. The result looks the same in the game while taking a form the engine can use directly.

VTF is Valve's own format and not an open standard, which is why general image apps need a plugin to read it. Other image targets are available in the Image Converter page.

The sheet sums up why VTF needs a dedicated converter. It is a proprietary format from Valve, first used in 2004, that can store compressed or uncompressed pixels, an alpha channel and animation frames. Windows Explorer, phone galleries and browsers do not open it, so check the result inside the game rather than in an image viewer.

Getting the size right

Source textures use dimensions that are powers of two: 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 and so on. Width and height do not have to match, so 512 × 256 is fine, but a 500 × 500 image is not a power of two on either side. Resize the PNG with Resize Image to the nearest suitable size before converting.

Sprays are commonly made square, for example 256 × 256 or 512 × 512, and the game decides how large they appear on a wall. For map textures, pick the size based on how close players will see the surface; larger textures look sharper but use more memory.

Check these before you convert

Most failed textures come from the source image, not the conversion:

  • Sides that are not powers of two, such as 1000 × 1000.
  • A JPG source with no alpha channel when the spray needs transparency.
  • A missing or wrong VMT file for map and model textures.

Using the texture in a game

For a spray, many Source games let you import an image through their own options menu, and the game stores it as a VTF. Converting yourself is useful when the in-game importer is missing, limited or rejects your file, and for community servers or mods that expect a ready VTF in a folder.

For map and model work, place the VTF in a folder under the game's materials directory and write a VMT that points to it. Up to 20 PNGs can be converted per batch, so a set of textures for one map goes through at once. Uploads are deleted after processing and the VTFs 30 minutes later.

How to convert PNG to VTF

  1. Prepare and add the PNG

Resize the image to power-of-two sides such as 256 × 256 or 512 × 512, then drop it on the box above or press Choose Files.

  2. Keep VTF as the output

VTF is preset. Transparency in the PNG is kept in the texture's alpha channel.

  3. Convert and copy into the game

Press Convert to VTF, download the file and place it in the game's materials folder or spray folder.

PNG to VTF questions

What is a VTF file used for?

VTF, the Valve Texture Format, stores textures for games on Valve's Source engine, such as Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Garry's Mod and Half-Life 2. Sprays, weapon skins and map textures are all VTF files, usually paired with a small VMT material file.

Why must my PNG be a power-of-two size for VTF?

Source textures use power-of-two dimensions such as 128, 256, 512 or 1024 pixels per side. Resize the PNG to such a size before converting, for example with Resize Image, so the texture loads as intended.

Does the VTF keep the transparency of my PNG?

Yes. The PNG's alpha channel is stored in the texture, which sprays and decals use for their see-through areas.

Do I also need a VMT file next to the VTF?

For map and model textures, yes: the VMT is a short text file that tells the engine which VTF to use and how to shade it. Sprays applied through the game's own menu usually do not need one.

Can I choose DXT compression or mipmaps for the VTF?

This page has no settings for the texture's internal encoding. If a map or mod needs a specific encoding, open the converted file in VTFEdit or Valve's own tools to adjust it.
