85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.

Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.

2019
Year the Alliance for Open Media published AVIF 1.0.0
Read the AVIF specification. Browsers adopted it quickly; editors and design tools are still catching up, which is why a PNG copy helps.

AVIF packs AV1-coded images into a HEIF container. The Image Converter page reads it and writes PNG or other formats.
Why AVIF to PNG rather than JPG
Most guides tell you to turn AVIF into JPG, and for an ordinary photo that is fine. But many AVIF files on the web are not ordinary photos. Shops serve product cutouts as AVIF with transparent backgrounds, and design-heavy sites use it for logos, illustrations and interface graphics. JPG would put a white box behind all of those and blur their sharp edges.
PNG keeps both. It has a full alpha channel, so a cutout stays a cutout, and it is lossless, so edges and text stay crisp. It also opens in every editor, slide tool and design program, including the many that cannot import AVIF yet.
The other reason is color depth. AVIF can store 10 or 12 bits per channel. JPG has 8, but PNG can hold up to 16, so a high-bit AVIF loses less on the way to PNG than on the way to JPG.
There is a practical side too. Design apps, presentation software and many content management systems accept PNG uploads for logos and graphics, but reject AVIF. Converting once means the same file works in all of them, and you do not have to keep track of which tool supports which format.
AVIF against PNG
AVIF
AVIF image
An image format from the Alliance for Open Media, released in 2019 and built on the AV1 video codec. It supports lossy and lossless modes, transparency, animation and HDR. Current browsers display it, but many editors, operating system previews and upload forms are still catching up.

PNG
PNG image
An open raster format the PNG Development Group published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Compression is lossless and a full alpha channel keeps soft edges and cutouts clean. It suits screenshots, logos and interface graphics; photos come out much larger than as JPG.

- Transparency
- Still images only
Why convertAVIF to PNG keeps what JPG would discard: the alpha channel, sharp edges and more than 8 bits of color. You trade AVIF's tiny files for the most widely editable lossless format. Use it for cutouts, graphics and editing masters; for plain photos to share, AVIF to JPG gives smaller files.
Both formats are open standards with support for transparency, and both are royalty-free. What separates them is purpose. AVIF was built to move pictures across the web in as few bytes as possible. PNG was built to store pictures exactly and be read by anything.
A lossy AVIF has already discarded some detail. The PNG reproduces that picture faithfully, with no new loss, but it does not restore what the AVIF encoder removed. A lossless AVIF, which some graphics use, converts to a pixel-identical PNG.
Color profiles are carried over, so brand colors in a logo do not shift, and orientation is applied so the image opens the right way up. Location and camera details, which graphics rarely carry, are removed by default.
What happens during the conversion
The drawing below follows one file through the converter. The AVIF is decoded to raw pixels, including the alpha channel, and those pixels are written as PNG. PNG has no quality slider, because there is nothing to trade: the only settings that apply are size, color space and metadata.
The AV1 data is decoded into pixels with their transparency, then stored by PNG's lossless compression. Nothing is discarded at the encode step, which is why the PNG matches what the AVIF showed. Need fewer pixels? Set them under Resize output or with Resize Image.
File size and batches
Expect PNGs to be much larger than the AVIF originals, especially for photos. Graphics with flat colors grow less. If the files are for a website rather than for editing, keep the AVIF versions online and use the PNGs only in the tools that need them.
You can convert up to 20 AVIF files per batch, each up to 95 MB. Uploads are deleted right after conversion and the PNGs 30 minutes later. Animated AVIF files give their first frame by default, or every frame as separate PNGs if you choose that under Advanced settings.
For a large set of product images, convert only the files you actually need to edit. The rest can stay as AVIF on the website, where its small size helps pages load quickly, and you avoid storing many large PNG copies.
How to convert AVIF to PNG
Drop in your AVIF files
Add up to 20 .avif images on the box above, or press Choose Files.
Leave PNG selected
PNG is preset and lossless. For animated AVIF, the first frame is used unless you choose every frame under Advanced settings.
Convert and download
Press Convert to PNG and save the results.
AVIF to PNG questions
Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Both formats have a full alpha channel, so transparent and partly transparent pixels carry over exactly. Logos and product cutouts stay ready to place on any background.
What happens to the color depth when an AVIF becomes a PNG?
PNG can store up to 16 bits per channel, so 10- and 12-bit AVIF images do not have to be cut down to 8 bits the way a JPG would. Colors are converted to sRGB by default; choose Keep original under Color space to keep the source space.
Why is the PNG many times larger than the AVIF?
AVIF is one of the most efficient formats available, and lossy AVIF photos are very small. PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which takes much more space, especially for photos.
Should I convert AVIF to PNG or to JPG?
PNG for graphics, transparent images and anything you will edit. JPG for photos you only want to view, share or upload, because the files are far smaller.
Can I get every frame of an animated AVIF as PNG?
Yes. Set Animated input to export every frame, and each frame is saved as its own PNG file.
