An SVG is a drawing described in code; as a PDF it becomes a fixed page that prints and opens the same way for everyone, without losing its sharp edges.

Why convert a vector file to PDF

SVG files are everywhere in design and web work: logos from a brand kit, icons from an icon set, charts exported from a data tool, floor plans and cutting templates. They are perfect for websites and design apps, but awkward to hand to anyone else. Double-click one and it may open in a browser tab, a code editor or a program that only shows the raw markup.

A PDF is the version people outside the design team can use. It opens in any PDF reader, prints at the right size, can be attached to an email for approval, and fits workflows such as print shops, sign makers and document archives that are built around PDF rather than web formats.

Approval rounds are a typical case. A designer sends three logo options to a client, a manager or a print buyer who does not have an illustration program. As SVG they arrive as code files that may open in the wrong app; as one PDF with a page per option they open on any phone or laptop, can be printed side by side and commented on with the tools people already use.

SVG

SVG graphic

The W3C's XML-based vector format, published as a standard in 2001. Shapes and text are described as instructions rather than pixels, so the image stays sharp at any size, and it supports transparency and animation. Browsers render it natively, and cutting machines and design tools import it.

PDF

PDF document

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

  • Still images only

Why convertThis direction keeps the drawing's vector shapes and gives them a page: the logo or chart stays sharp at any zoom, but becomes a fixed document for printing, approval and filing rather than an editable web graphic. To go back to an editable drawing from a PDF, use PDF to SVG.

Browsers show SVG in web pages and open PDF in their built-in viewer, so either file previews without extra software. Sources: caniuse SVG, caniuse PDF viewer.

If both open in a browser, why convert? Because a browser shows an SVG as a web graphic, sized to the window and without any notion of paper. Print it and the result depends on the browser's print settings. A PDF has a defined page size, so the logo prints at the size you chose, and desktop PDF readers, print drivers and office systems treat it as a document.

There is also a difference in what the files can contain. An SVG can hold scripts, animations, links to outside images and fonts it does not include. A PDF made from it holds only what is drawn on the page, which makes it a safer file to pass around and archive.

Preparing an SVG for a clean PDF

Most conversion surprises come from things the SVG refers to but does not contain. Fonts are the most common: a heading set in a brand font is drawn in a fallback if that font is not available, so convert text to outlines in your design app before export. Linked images, such as a photo placed by reference, should be embedded. And very large artboards with empty space around the drawing produce large, mostly blank pages, so trim the artboard to the artwork.

For page size, Same as image uses the width and height stored in the SVG, which is right for a logo or a chart that will be placed into another document. For printing, pick A4, Letter or a custom size in millimeters, and use Fit to place the drawing within the margins. Orientation on Auto turns wide drawings onto landscape pages.

Several SVGs in one batch become one PDF, in the order of the file list, which is a quick way to send a set of logo variants or a series of charts for review. Uploads are deleted after conversion and the PDF after 30 minutes. For raster images such as PNG or JPG, the main Image to PDF tool has the same settings, and SVG to PNG makes a pixel copy for apps that cannot place vectors.

Change SVG files into PDF

  1. Add the SVG files

Drop one or more .svg files on the box above, or press Choose Files. Up to 50 drawings fit in one batch.

  2. Decide the page size

With Same as image, the page matches the drawing's own size. Choose A4, Letter or a custom size when it has to sit on a sheet.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to PDF. Several SVGs become one PDF with a page each, or one PDF per file if you change Output.

SVG to PDF questions

Does an SVG stay a vector when it becomes a PDF?

Yes. PDF can describe the same paths, fills and strokes as SVG, so shapes are drawn as vectors, not turned into pixels. Zooming in on the PDF shows clean edges at every magnification.

Why does the text in my PDF use a different font?

An SVG often names a font without containing it. If that font is not available when the file is drawn, a substitute is used. In your design app, convert text to outlines or paths before exporting the SVG, and the letters will look the same everywhere.

What happens to an animated SVG?

A PDF page is static, so the drawing appears in its starting state. Animations, hover effects and scripts in the SVG are not carried over.

My SVG shows a missing image in the PDF. Why?

The SVG probably links to a picture stored somewhere else instead of embedding it. Embed linked images in your design app before export, so everything the drawing needs is inside the one file.

Can I send an SVG to a print shop as a PDF?

Yes, and many print shops prefer PDF because their workflow is built around it. Use a custom page size that matches the print size, and ask the shop whether they need bleed or a particular PDF standard.

Can I combine several SVG icons on one page?

Yes. Set Images per page to 2 or 4, choose a paper size, and the icons are placed in a grid on each sheet, which works well for a quick icon overview.
