What does PDF to SVG actually give me?

One vector SVG per page, in which lines, shapes and text from the PDF stay as editable objects that scale without blurring; photos on the page stay photos.

Every major browser shows both formats, so an SVG made from a PDF page can be placed straight on a web page. Sources: caniuse SVG, caniuse PDF viewer.

Why designers and developers want SVG

Much of the vector artwork in circulation lives inside PDFs: a logo in a brand guideline, a chart in an annual report, a floor plan from an architect, an infographic from a publisher, a diagram exported from a spreadsheet. Copying it out as a screenshot turns it into pixels that blur when enlarged. Converting the page to SVG keeps it as vector paths that a design tool can edit and a browser can render at any size.

SVG is a W3C standard, with the SVG 1.1 Second Edition Recommendation dating from 2011, and it is plain text. That makes it easy to style with CSS, animate, compress on a web server and keep under version control, which is why front-end developers often ask for icons and illustrations in SVG.

Plotters, vinyl cutters and laser engravers are another audience. Their software often imports SVG directly and follows its paths with the blade or the beam, so a logo or a pattern supplied as a PDF needs to become SVG before it can be cut. In that case outlined text and simple, closed shapes give the cleanest result.

PDF

PDF document

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

SVG

SVG graphic

The W3C's XML-based vector format, published as a standard in 2001. Shapes and text are described as instructions rather than pixels, so the image stays sharp at any size, and it supports transparency and animation. Browsers render it natively, and cutting machines and design tools import it.

Why convertThis direction frees the vector drawing from its document: a page that could only be viewed or printed becomes a graphic you can recolor, edit and place on a web page at any size. For a picture of the page instead of editable shapes, PDF to PNG is simpler.

What converts well and what does not

PDFs made by design, office or charting software contain real vector content, and that content comes through cleanly: paths, fills, strokes, gradients and text. Embedded photos remain photos inside the SVG, placed as images. Transparency and layering are kept as far as SVG can express them.

A quick way to tell what you have: open the PDF and try to select a word or zoom far into a line. If the text highlights and the line stays crisp at high zoom, the page is vector and will convert into editable shapes. If nothing selects and edges turn into pixels as you zoom, the page is an image, and the warning below applies.

Scanned PDFs stay pictures

If the PDF came from a scanner or a phone camera, each page is a single image. The SVG then holds that image and nothing more, so it will not become editable shapes.

Text, fonts and file handling

By default, text in the PDF stays text in the SVG, so you can still select it, search it and fix a typo in a design tool. The catch is fonts: the SVG names the fonts the PDF used, and a computer without them shows a substitute. Turning on Convert text to outlines draws every letter as a shape, which looks the same everywhere but cannot be edited as text anymore. Cutting machines and sign makers usually want outlines.

Each page becomes its own SVG, named in page order. Choose First page only or Selected pages to skip the rest of a long document, and Separate files under Download as if you do not want a ZIP. Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first.

For the web, run the finished SVG through an optimizer of your choice before publishing. Files converted from PDF carry precise coordinates and grouping that design tools like, but a web page can do with fewer decimals and fewer groups.

Uploads are deleted once the SVG files are ready, and the results 30 minutes later. For raster formats such as PNG, JPG or TIFF, or for EPS as another vector option, use the main PDF to Image tool.

Convert PDF pages to SVG

  1. Upload the PDF

Drop the PDF on the box above or press Choose Files. Up to 20 PDFs fit in one batch.

  2. Choose pages and text handling

SVG is preset. Pick Selected pages if you only need a chart or a logo, and turn on Convert text to outlines if the fonts must look identical everywhere.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to SVG. Each page becomes one .svg file, delivered in a ZIP or as separate files.

PDF to SVG questions

Will a scanned PDF become a real vector SVG?

No. A scan is a photo of paper, so the SVG contains that photo as an embedded image rather than lines and shapes. To trace a scan or a logo into true vector paths, use the Image to SVG tool, which redraws the outlines.

Should I turn text into outlines?

Turn it on when the SVG will be opened on computers that may not have the PDF's fonts, or when it goes to a cutting machine or a sign maker. Leave it off if you want to edit the words later, since outlined text can no longer be retyped.

Can I open the SVG in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma?

Yes. All three open SVG files, and shapes, colors and text arrive as editable objects. Complex PDFs can produce many small groups, so expect to ungroup or tidy layers after import.

Can all pages of my PDF end up in a single SVG file?

No. SVG describes a single drawing, so each page becomes its own file. If you need everything in one image, stack the pages in a design tool after converting.

How do I get just one chart from a 40-page report?

Set Pages to Selected pages and type the page number. The whole page is converted; crop the chart out in your design tool, where its shapes stay separate and easy to select.

Why is my SVG file larger than the PDF?

PDFs compress their drawing instructions and share fonts across pages, while each SVG is plain text describing one page on its own. Pages with many small shapes or outlined text produce large SVG files.
