150 dpi

the default resolution: sharp on screens, light enough to share.

Raise it to 300 dpi for print or for pages with small print people will zoom into; the table below shows the pixel sizes that result.

Why PNG suits document pages

When a PDF page becomes a picture, the page is drawn at the resolution you choose and then stored in an image format. PNG stores that picture without loss, so the thin strokes of letters, the hairlines of a table and the edges of a diagram stay exactly as they were drawn. JPG would blur those edges slightly and add faint noise around text, which is why PNG is the better choice for anything that is mostly text or line art.

Typical uses are pasting a page into a slide deck or a design, attaching a chart from a report to a chat message, posting a page of a menu or a flyer online, and adding a page to an app or a tool that accepts images but not PDFs. For photos and scanned pictures where file size matters more than crisp edges, PDF to JPG makes lighter files.

Your PDF reader may offer something similar, such as a snapshot tool or an export option, but it usually works one page at a time and at whatever resolution the screen happens to show. Converting here gives every page the same chosen resolution, keeps the numbering, and handles a whole document or several documents in one batch.

PDF

PDF document

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

PNG

PNG image

An open raster format the PNG Development Group published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Compression is lossless and a full alpha channel keeps soft edges and cutouts clean. It suits screenshots, logos and interface graphics; photos come out much larger than as JPG.

  • Still images only

Why convertIn this direction a page that only exists inside a document viewer becomes a standalone picture: every line and letter stays sharp and lossless, and the image goes anywhere an image is accepted. The text stops being selectable, so keep the PDF as the source; PNG to PDF wraps images into a document again.

PDF to PNG questions

Why is the PNG much bigger than the PDF page it came from?

A PDF can describe text and lines as compact instructions, while a PNG stores every pixel of the drawn page. At 300 dpi an A4 page has more than eight million pixels, so the image is naturally larger than the instructions that produced it.

What resolution should I use for slides or a website?

150 dpi, the default, is sharp on laptops and phones and in slides. Go to 200 or 300 dpi only if people will zoom into small print, and use 72 to 96 dpi for thumbnails.

Can I get a PNG with a see-through background from a PDF?

Yes. Turn on Transparent background under Quality & color. The white page area is left transparent, which helps when you place a logo, a signature or a chart from a PDF on a colored design.

How do I convert only page 3 of a PDF to PNG?

Set Pages to Selected pages and type 3. Ranges and lists also work, for example 2-4 or 1, 5, 9.

Are the words in the PNG still searchable?

No. A PNG holds pixels only, so text becomes part of the picture. If you need the words, keep the PDF or use the Image to Text tool on the PNG.

Can I get grayscale or black-and-white PNGs?

Yes. Set Color to Grayscale or Black & white. Black and white works well for scanned text and makes the files much smaller.

Resolution, pixels and file size

Resolution decides how many pixels each page gets. An A4 page is 210 × 297 mm, about 8.3 × 11.7 inches, so at 150 dpi it becomes an image of roughly 1240 × 1754 pixels, and at 300 dpi 2480 × 3508 pixels, as the table shows. Doubling the resolution quadruples the pixel count, and the PNG grows with it.

Pick the resolution for the place the image is going. A slide or a web page rarely shows more than 2000 pixels across, so 150 dpi is enough. Print at full page size needs about 300 dpi. Engineering drawings with fine lines and very small text can use up to 600 dpi, at the cost of large files.

Content matters for size as well. A page of black text on white compresses very well in PNG, because long runs of identical pixels take little room. A page with a full-color photo or a gradient background compresses poorly and can be many times larger at the same resolution. If such pages make the ZIP too heavy, convert them separately as JPG and keep PNG for the text pages.

DPI
Also called dots per inch · ppi
The number of pixels drawn for each inch of the page. A PDF has a physical page size, so DPI turns it into pixels: the higher the value, the more detail and the larger the file. It does not change the content, only how finely it is sampled.

Pages, color and the download

All pages are converted by default. Choose First page only for a cover image or thumbnail, or Selected pages with numbers and ranges to pick the rest. Color can stay in full color, or switch to grayscale or black and white for scanned documents. With Transparent background, the white paper is dropped and only the content remains.

Several PDFs can go in one batch, and each one gets its own set of numbered images, so pages from different documents do not mix in the download.

Pages arrive in one ZIP named in page order; choose Separate files under Download as to save each PNG on its own. Password-protected PDFs need to be opened first with Unlock PDF. Uploads are deleted once the images are ready, and the images after 30 minutes. For other targets such as TIFF, WebP or SVG, open the main PDF to Image tool.
