600 × 600

pixels, exactly the square required for a U.S. Diversity Visa entry photo

The State Department's DV instructions ask for exactly 600 by 600 pixels and a file of no more than 240 KB. Most other uses of a 600 px square are conventions, not rules.

The table shows how rare an exact 600 × 600 pixel rule is. Among the official digital photo specs we have checked, only the Diversity Visa entry asks for precisely this square. The UK sets a minimum of 600 by 750 pixels, a portrait shape, so a 600 × 600 square would be too short for it. India and Singapore name exact sizes that are portrait as well. If your form is one of those, type its numbers into the width and height boxes rather than using 600 × 600.

For the Diversity Visa itself, pixel size is only one of several rules, alongside the head position, background and how recent the photo is. Read the instructions in full before you submit. This page handles the pixel and file-size part; for a full passport or visa photo with the right head size and background, use the Passport Photo Maker.

Other sites that mention a 600 px square, such as online shops, forums or school portals, usually treat it as a recommended display size. In those cases a slightly larger square works too, but 600 × 600 is a reliable middle ground that looks sharp and keeps files small.

Getting a square from a rectangle

Almost every camera photo is a rectangle, usually 4:3 or 3:2, and a 600 × 600 frame is 1:1. Something has to give, and the drawing below shows the three ways it can. This page uses Crop to fill: the photo is scaled until it covers the whole square and the parts that stick out are trimmed. Nothing is distorted, and the result is a full square with no bars.

Crop to fill keeps the center by default, which suits portraits taken straight on. If the face sits higher in the frame, set Crop position to Top, or choose Smart (subject) to let the tool find the main subject. For photos where nothing may be cut, Fit inside keeps the whole image and Pad with color fills the gaps with white. To choose the square by hand instead, draw it with Crop Image and then resize the result here.

Three ways to fit a rectangle into a square

Fit keeps the whole photo and leaves empty space, Fill covers the square and trims the overflow, and Stretch reaches the size by distorting the picture. This page defaults to Fill.

File size and format

A 600 × 600 image has 360,000 pixels, a small fraction of a modern phone photo, so the resized file is light. Saved as JPEG at the default quality of 85, it typically lands far under limits like 240 KB. If a form names a maximum, tick Limit file size and type the number; quality is lowered only if the file would otherwise be too large.

The output keeps the input format unless you choose another under Output format. JPG is the safe choice for photos and forms, PNG keeps hard edges for logos and screenshots, and WebP gives smaller files for websites. Location and camera details are removed by default, which is usually what you want for a photo you upload to an official form or a public profile.

Keeping the square sharp

Scaling a large photo down to 600 pixels is the easy direction. Each output pixel is calculated from many input pixels, so edges stay clean and noise from the camera sensor is averaged away. The result usually looks crisper than the original does at the same size on screen.

Scaling up is the hard direction. A crop from a group photo or an old picture saved from a chat app may have only 300 or 400 pixels across the face, and stretching that to 600 adds pixels the camera never recorded. The square will have the right numbers but look soft. If you can, go back to the original file from the camera or phone gallery rather than a copy that was already made smaller by a messaging app.

Auto orient is on by default, so photos taken with the phone held sideways come out the right way up. Without it, some images would be cropped as if they were lying on their side.

How to resize an image to 600 × 600

  1. Choose the photo

Drop a JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP image on the box above, or press Choose Files. Up to 20 images can be resized together.

  2. Check the square crop

Width and height are set to 600 px with Crop to fill. If the subject is off-center, change Crop position under Advanced settings.

  3. Resize and download

Press Resize, then save the result. Open it once to make sure the crop kept what matters.

600 × 600 resize questions

Is 600 × 600 pixels the US passport photo size?

No. The 600 × 600 pixel rule belongs to the U.S. Diversity Visa entry. For passport photos the State Department sets a printed size of 2 × 2 inches and its own rules for online uploads, so check its photo page before resizing.

How do I keep a 600 × 600 photo under 240 KB?

Tick Limit file size under Advanced settings and enter 240 KB. A 600 × 600 JPEG at normal quality is usually far below that already, so the limit rarely changes the picture.

Will my rectangular photo be distorted?

Not with the default Crop to fill. The photo is trimmed to a square first and then scaled, so faces keep their shape. Only Stretch to exact size distorts, and that option is off unless you choose it.

What if my photo is smaller than 600 pixels?

It is enlarged to reach 600 × 600, which makes it softer. For a sharp result, start from a photo that is at least 600 pixels on its shorter side; most phone photos are many times larger.

Can I add a white border instead of cropping?

Yes. Choose Pad with color under Fit and keep white as the pad color. The whole photo stays visible inside the square, with white bars filling the rest.

Is 600 × 600 a good size for a profile picture?

It is a safe square for most sites, which scale profile pictures down for display. Some platforms publish their own sizes, so the Discord profile picture page and similar pages give the numbers each one asks for.
