Resize Image to 1920 × 1080

1920 × 1080 is the Full HD frame used by most monitors, TVs, slide decks and video editors. Drop in a picture and it comes back filling that 16:9 frame exactly.

1920 × 1080 is a 16:9 frame of just over two million pixels, the size most screens, slides and video projects are built around.

Where the Full HD frame comes from

The 1920 × 1080 frame is the high-definition television format defined by the ITU in Recommendation BT.709, and it spread from TVs to computer monitors, laptops, projectors and phones. Because so much hardware shares it, it became the default canvas for presentation software, video editors and screen recordings as well.

Its shape is 16:9, meaning 16 units wide for every 9 tall. That is the part that matters most when you resize a picture for it. A photo from a phone camera is usually 4:3, a DSLR photo 3:2, and neither fills a 16:9 frame without either cropping or bars. The pixel count is the second part: the frame holds 2,073,600 pixels, so the picture should ideally have at least that many before it is resized.

Video platforms use the same shape at other sizes. The cards below show three image sizes YouTube publishes on its help pages, each in the 16:9 family or its vertical twin.

A useful check before resizing is the ratio of your picture's width to its height. A result close to 1.78 means it is already 16:9 and will scale without any cropping; 1.33 means 4:3 and 1.5 means 3:2, both of which lose a strip.

Crop, fit or pad

This page uses Crop to fill, which scales the picture until it covers the whole 1920 × 1080 frame and trims what overflows. For a landscape photo going into a wide frame, only a strip from the top and bottom is lost. For a portrait photo, a large part of the height disappears, so check the result or choose a different fit.

Fit inside keeps the whole picture and makes one side shorter than the target, which is useful when the exact frame does not matter. Pad with color gives the exact 1920 × 1080 size with bars in a color you choose, which looks deliberate on slides and in videos where a cropped head would not.

When several pictures go into one slideshow or video, resize them in a single batch. Up to 20 images get the same frame and the same fit, so they line up without jumps in size when one slide follows another. Mixed orientations are worth sorting first: landscape photos usually crop well, while portrait shots often look better padded.

How to resize an image to 1920 × 1080

  1. Upload the picture

Drop the image on the box above or press Choose Files. JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP and other common formats work, up to 20 at once.

  2. Keep 1920 × 1080

Width 1920 and height 1080 px are set with Crop to fill. Switch to Fit inside or Pad with color under Advanced settings if nothing may be cut off.

  3. Resize and download

Press Resize and save the picture. It is ready to use as a wallpaper, a slide background or a still in a video timeline.

1920 × 1080 questions

Is 1920 × 1080 the same as 1080p?

Yes. 1080p names the height of the frame, 1,080 lines, shown progressively rather than interlaced. The width that goes with it at a 16:9 shape is 1,920 pixels. The same frame is also called Full HD or FHD.

Why are there black bars when I set my image as a wallpaper?

The picture's shape did not match the screen, so the system fitted it inside and filled the gaps. Resizing it to 1920 × 1080 with Crop to fill gives a 16:9 picture that covers a Full HD screen edge to edge.

My monitor is 2560 × 1440. Should I still use 1920 × 1080?

Use your screen's own size for a wallpaper, so it shows pixel for pixel. Both are 16:9, so a 1920 × 1080 picture scales up evenly, but it will look a little softer than one made at 2560 × 1440. Type your screen size into the width and height boxes.

Can I make a portrait photo 1920 × 1080 without cutting off heads?

A tall photo in a wide frame loses most of its height with Crop to fill. Choose Pad with color to keep the full photo in the middle with colored bars at the sides, or set Crop position to Top to keep the upper part.

Is 1920 × 1080 good enough for a YouTube thumbnail?

It has the right 16:9 shape. YouTube's help page currently recommends a larger 3840 × 2160 thumbnail, shown in the cards on this page, and keeps a 2 MB size limit for uploads from the mobile app.

Getting a clean result

Most mistakes with this size come from the source image rather than the resize itself. A picture saved from a chat app or a website may be only a few hundred pixels wide, and stretching it to 1920 makes every flaw larger. Starting from the original camera file avoids that. The list below collects the habits that make the biggest difference.

Output format matters too. A photo saved as JPEG at the default quality of 85 stays a reasonable size even at two million pixels, while the same frame as PNG can be several times larger. That is fine for a wallpaper on your own computer but worth knowing if the picture will be emailed or uploaded somewhere with a file size limit; Limit file size under Advanced settings handles that case.

Do

  • Start from a picture at least 1,920 pixels wide, so the resize only ever scales down.
  • Choose PNG under Output format for slides with text or diagrams; edges stay crisp.

Avoid

  • Stretch to exact size on photos of people or round objects. Faces and circles look visibly wrong.
  • Using the same 1920 × 1080 file on a 4K screen and expecting it to look as sharp as a 3840 × 2160 version.

To bring a 4K video down to this frame size, use the 4K to 1080p converter, which applies the same 1920 × 1080 frame to every frame of the clip. For a picture that only needs a new outline without scaling, Crop Image lets you draw the area by hand, and the main Resize Image page takes any other width and height.

For a square instead of a wide frame, the 600 × 600 page uses the same crop settings at a 1:1 shape.
