Facebook Cover Size on Phones

A Facebook cover is cropped differently on a phone than on a computer. This page resizes your picture to the size Facebook recommends and explains which parts stay visible on each screen.

2.4:1

the shape of a Facebook Page cover on smartphones, against 16:9 on computers

Both figures are from Facebook's help article Facebook Page profile picture and cover photo dimensions. Because the two screens use different shapes, one picture is cropped in two different ways.

Facebook gives one recommended file for every screen: an sRGB JPG that is 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and smaller than 100 kilobytes, which it says loads fastest. That file is about 2.7:1, wider than either display shape. On a phone the cover is shown at 2.4:1, and on a computer at 16:9, both left-aligned with a full bleed. In other words, the picture fills the frame from the left and the overflow is cut on the right.

Worked out on the 315-pixel height, a 2.4:1 frame shows roughly the left 756 pixels of the 851, and a 16:9 frame roughly the left 560. The phone keeps most of the picture; the computer keeps a little under two thirds. The safest area for faces, logos and text is therefore the left two thirds of the cover, outside the corner where the profile picture overlaps it.

Decorative background can run to the right edge, where it shows on phones and is cut on computers. Other platforms publish their own banner shapes, and the cards above show two of them next to Facebook's for comparison.

What this page sets for you

The uploader is preset to Facebook's recommended file: 851 × 315 pixels, Crop to fill so the frame is covered without bars, JPG output and Limit file size at 100 KB. Location and camera data are removed by default. You only need to choose where the crop sits if your subject is not in the middle; Crop position offers top, bottom, left, right and a smart option that looks for the main subject.

A JPG this size is normally well under 100 KB at good quality, so the limit only steps in for very detailed pictures. If the result looks blocky, it is usually because the original had fine patterns such as foliage or fabric; a simpler picture compresses better at this size.

Keep text in the left two thirds

Both screens cut the cover on the right, the computer more than the phone. Text and faces placed in the left two thirds, vertically centered, are visible everywhere.

Leave the lower left clear

The profile picture sits over the left side of the cover and, on mobile, overlaps it by about 40 pixels. Keep the important part just to the right of that corner rather than in it.

Use PNG for logo covers

Covers made of flat colors and lettering look cleaner as PNG, as Facebook's own help page suggests. Switch Output format to PNG and untick Limit file size if needed.

Upload a larger file if it looks soft

On high-density phone screens an 851-pixel cover can look slightly soft. Doubling both sides to 1702 × 630 keeps the same shape with more detail.

Testing the cover on both screens

After uploading, look at the Page on a phone in portrait orientation and on a computer with a normal browser window. Facebook lets you reposition the cover by dragging it in the editor, which shifts the visible area without changing the file. If no position works on both screens, the picture's important part is too spread out; crop it tighter before resizing.

A quick test is to cover the right third of the picture with your hand. If what remains still tells the story and nothing important sits in the lower left corner, the cover will work on both devices, because that is roughly the area both crops share.

Facebook's help page also warns that a cover may be cropped and resized to fit different screens, so a cover that relies on one tiny detail at the edge rarely works. A clear subject with plenty of plain space around it survives every crop best.

Other platform sizes

Other networks use wider or taller banners. The LinkedIn banner page covers the 4:1 profile background, and the Resize Image page takes any width and height you type. To cut a picture to a shape by hand before resizing, use Crop Image.

How to make a Facebook cover that works on mobile

  1. Add your cover picture

Drop the image on the box above or press Choose Files. A wide landscape picture gives the best starting point.

  2. Keep the preset size

The output is 851 × 315 px, JPG, Crop to fill, with Limit file size at 100 KB. Set Crop position if the subject is not in the middle.

  3. Resize and upload

Press Resize, download the JPG and upload it as your cover. Check it once on your phone and once on a computer.

Facebook cover questions

Why does my Facebook cover look cut off on my phone?

Facebook's help page says the cover is shown at a 2.4:1 aspect ratio on smartphones and 16:9 on computers, left-aligned in both cases. A picture at another shape is cropped to fit each screen, so the edges of a wide banner disappear on one device or the other.

What is the minimum size for a Facebook cover?

Facebook asks for at least 400 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall on both computers and phones. Anything that small looks soft when stretched across a screen, so use the recommended 851 × 315 or larger.

Should I save my cover as JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos. Facebook says a cover loads fastest as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, which is what this page produces. For a cover that is mostly a logo or text, Facebook notes PNG may give a better result; pick it under Output format.

Does the profile picture cover part of the cover photo?

Yes. Facebook's help page states that the left side of the cover is partly covered by the profile picture and that on mobile devices the profile picture overlaps the cover by about 40 pixels. Keep text and faces away from the lower left.

Do these sizes apply to personal profiles too?

The figures here come from Facebook's help article for Page profile pictures and cover photos. Personal profiles use a similar wide cover, but Facebook's page for Pages is the one that states the sizes, so they are the numbers we can cite.
