TTF to WOFF2 Converter

Make compressed WOFF2 web fonts from TrueType .ttf files, each delivered with a ready-to-paste @font-face rule, so a typeface can go on your website in a few minutes.

2018

The year WOFF2 became a W3C Recommendation, the web's standard format for compressed fonts.

See the WOFF File Format 2.0 specification. It uses Brotli compression and transforms the font tables to make them compress better.

Why websites use WOFF2

A TrueType file is made for installing on a computer, where size hardly matters. On a website every font file has to be downloaded before the text can appear in that typeface, often several files for the regular, bold and italic styles. WOFF2 holds exactly the same font in far fewer bytes, which shortens that wait on every page a visitor opens.

The format was designed for this. It wraps the TrueType or OpenType data in a container that browsers unpack, compresses it with Brotli and reorganizes some tables first so they compress better. Nothing about the typeface changes: the letters, spacing, kerning and ligatures are identical once the browser has unpacked the file.

All current browsers support WOFF2, so for most sites it is the only font format you need to serve. The list above shows the other formats the Font Converter reads and writes, including older WOFF and EOT for legacy cases.

TTF

TrueType font

The outline font format Apple introduced in 1991, later adopted by Microsoft for Windows. Glyphs are described as quadratic curves with detailed hinting for screen display. Every desktop operating system installs it, and it works on the web too, though WOFF2 is lighter there.

WOFF2

WOFF2 font

The Web Open Font Format 2.0, a W3C recommendation from 2018 that wraps a TrueType or OpenType font in stronger compression. It exists for websites, where smaller font files load faster. Browsers read it, but desktop systems do not install it as an ordinary font.

Why convertA TTF is an uncompressed font made for installing on a computer; WOFF2 packs the same font into a compressed file browsers download quickly. Convert when a typeface goes onto a website, and keep the TTF for desktop apps.

From file to working web font

A web font needs two things: the font file on your server and a CSS rule that tells the browser where to find it. This page includes the second part. With Include @font-face CSS switched on, you get a small .css file next to the fonts, with one rule for each weight and style, ready to paste into your stylesheet. A rule looks like the line below; the converter fills in your font's real family name, weight and file name.

The font-display: swap part tells the browser to show text in a fallback font straight away and switch when the web font has loaded, so visitors never stare at blank space while the file downloads.

Upload the fonts and the stylesheet together, keep the file names unchanged, and the rule works as written. If your site uses a build tool or a content system with its own asset folder, place the .woff2 files there and adjust the url() paths to match.

An @font-face rule for a WOFF2 font

@font-face { font-family: "Example Sans"; src: url("example-sans-regular.woff2") format("woff2"); font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-display: swap; }

Making the files even smaller

Many fonts contain thousands of characters for languages your site never shows. Under Keep characters you can limit a font to Basic Latin for English, Latin with accents for European languages, or Cyrillic, Greek or Vietnamese. For a logo or a headline font, Only characters I type keeps just the letters you paste in, which can make the file tiny. Keep ligatures & kerning stays on so the remaining characters still join and space correctly.

Hinting is the other lever. Hints help small text on some Windows screens, but they take space, and many sites remove them from display fonts used only at large sizes. Test the result on a Windows machine if body text uses the font.

If you start from an .otf rather than a .ttf, it converts to WOFF2 here just as well; to make an installable TrueType copy instead, use OTF to TTF. Up to 20 fonts fit in one batch, and every file is deleted from the server 30 minutes after it is ready.

Hosting fonts on your own site

Serving fonts from your own server, rather than from a third-party font service, keeps every request on your domain and lets you decide exactly which files load. It also means the fonts keep working if an outside service changes its terms or goes offline. The trade-off is that you are responsible for converting and updating the files, which is what this page makes simple.

Load only what the design uses. Each weight and style is a separate download, so a site that needs regular and bold should not ship light, medium and black as well. Preloading the one font used for body text, with a link element in the page head, helps it arrive early; the others can load as they are needed.

Keep the original TTF files somewhere safe. If you later need a different subset or want to add a language, convert again from the full TTF rather than from a WOFF2 that has already been trimmed.

How to convert TTF to WOFF2

  1. Add the .ttf files

Drop the fonts on the box above, or press Choose Files. Add every weight and style your site uses.

  2. Keep the CSS option

WOFF2 and Include @font-face CSS are set. Under Advanced settings, choose a character subset to make the files smaller.

  3. Convert and upload

Press Convert to WOFF2, put the fonts in your site's font folder and paste the CSS into your stylesheet.

TTF to WOFF2 questions

Which browsers support WOFF2?

Every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and on phones. Unless you need to support very old browsers, WOFF2 alone is enough.

Does WOFF2 change how the font looks?

No. WOFF2 is a compressed wrapper around the same font data, so the letters, spacing and features are identical once the browser unpacks it. Only the file size changes.

What does the @font-face file contain?

A CSS rule for each font with its family name, weight and style and a link to the .woff2 file. Adjust the path in the url() if you store fonts somewhere other than next to the stylesheet.

Should I subset the font?

If your site uses only one or two scripts, yes. A subset keeps only the characters you choose, such as Basic Latin, which can make the file much smaller. Keep all characters if visitors may type text in other languages.

Can I turn a WOFF2 back into a TTF?

Yes, the Font Converter converts WOFF2 to TTF or OTF for installing on a computer. The result matches the WOFF2 it came from, so a subset stays a subset.

Am I allowed to use any font on my website?

Only if its license allows web embedding. Many desktop licenses do not include it, while open-source fonts usually do. Check the license before you upload a converted font to a server.
