DWG to DXF Converter

DWG is AutoCAD's own drawing format; DXF is the exchange format almost every other CAD, CAM and cutting program reads. Convert here and choose the DXF version the receiving software expects.

Why convert a DWG to DXF?

So that software other than AutoCAD can open the drawing. DXF is the documented exchange format that cutting machines, CAM tools and most CAD programs read.

Same drawing, two kinds of file

Autodesk introduced both formats with AutoCAD in 1982, and they have lived side by side ever since. DWG is the working file: a compact binary format that AutoCAD reads and writes quickly, and whose internal structure Autodesk does not publish as an open specification. DXF holds the same drawing as tagged values, usually as text, and Autodesk documents it in its DXF reference so other developers can read and write it.

That difference decides when you need each. Inside an AutoCAD team, DWG is the natural choice. As soon as a drawing leaves for a laser-cutting shop, a CNC router, a sign maker or a colleague using different CAD software, DXF is the safer bet, because a program that has never seen DWG can still parse a documented format.

DWG

DWG drawing

AutoCAD's native drawing format, in use since 1982 for architecture and engineering work. It stores precise 2D and 3D geometry, layers and annotations in a closed format. AutoCAD and compatible CAD programs open it; viewers without CAD support usually need a PDF or image.

DXF

DXF drawing

The Drawing Exchange Format Autodesk introduced in 1982 so other programs could read AutoCAD data. It describes vector geometry in a documented text or binary form. CAD software, laser cutters and CNC tools commonly import it.

  • Vendor format

Why convertYou move from AutoCAD's own compact format to the documented exchange format, so a cutter, CAM program or other CAD tool can read the geometry. The file gets larger, and DXF versions older than the drawing drop newer object types.

The DWG format in brief

DWG has changed its internal version many times, roughly every few AutoCAD releases. A drawing saved in a recent version cannot be opened by programs that only know an older one, which is the most common reason people convert at all. DXF has versions too, matching AutoCAD's, and the converter lets you pick the one the other side understands.

The conversion itself does not redraw anything. Lines, arcs, circles, polylines, hatches, blocks and text are written into the DXF with the same coordinates, layers and colors they had in the DWG, so the drawing is the same drawing in a format more programs understand. Model space and layouts are both kept.

Choosing the DXF version

AutoCAD version offers 2018, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2004, 2000, Release 14 and Release 12. Newer versions keep more of the drawing as it was, such as annotative text, complex hatches and newer object types. Older versions are read by more programs, especially machine controllers and simple CAM tools, many of which were written around R12 and never updated.

When you do not know what the other side needs, the notes below cover the usual cases. If the receiving program reports an error or shows an empty drawing, convert again at a lower version; nothing is lost by trying, since the original DWG is never changed.

Sending to another CAD program

Keep AutoCAD 2018 or 2013. Current versions of most CAD applications read these and keep the drawing closest to the original.

Laser cutting, CNC or plasma

Try Release 12 or 2000. Many machine controllers expect these, and simple geometry such as lines, arcs and polylines converts cleanly.

Vinyl cutters and sign software

Start with 2000. If curves come out as many short segments, ask the shop which version their software imports best.

Archiving a project

Keep the original DWG as the master file and store a DXF at a recent version beside it as a readable fallback.

What to check in the DXF

Open the DXF in the program that will use it and check three things. First, the units: DXF stores numbers, and a drawing in millimeters read as inches will be 25.4 times too large, so confirm the import units match. Second, the layers: cutting software often uses layer names or colors to decide what to cut, score or engrave. Third, text and dimensions, which some older programs replace with a default font.

For a printable copy rather than an editable file, convert the same DWG to PDF with the DWG to PDF page. Other CAD conversions, including DXF to DWG and CorelDRAW files, are on the main CAD Converter page. Uploaded drawings are deleted when processing finishes, and results after 30 minutes.

A whole folder of drawings can go through in one batch with the same version, which saves time when a shop asks for every part of a job in one format.

How to convert DWG to DXF

  1. Upload the DWG files

Drop one or more .dwg drawings on the box above, or press Choose Files. Up to 20 can be converted together.

  2. Pick the DXF version

DXF and AutoCAD 2018 are preset. If the program that will open the file is older, choose a lower version, down to Release 12.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to DXF and save the files. Open one in the target program to check layers and scale.

DWG to DXF questions

Which DXF version should I choose?

Use the newest version the receiving program supports. AutoCAD 2018 is the default and suits current CAD software. Laser cutters, CNC controllers and older CAM tools often ask for R12 or 2000, so check their documentation or try R12 if a file will not open.

Will layers and colors survive the conversion?

Yes. DXF stores the same layers, colors, line types and blocks as DWG. Very old versions such as R12 cannot hold some newer object types, which are converted to simpler geometry so the drawing still looks the same.

Why is the DXF file much larger than the DWG?

DWG is a compact binary format, while DXF is usually written as plain text with every value spelled out. A DXF several times the size of its DWG is normal.

Do I need AutoCAD to open the DXF?

No. DXF was created so that drawings could move between programs, and most CAD, vector and CAM applications import it, including free ones.

Can I convert DXF back to DWG here?

Yes. The same tool converts in the other direction: upload the DXF on the CAD Converter page and choose DWG (AutoCAD) as the output.
