DWG to PDF Converter

Clients, contractors and permit offices rarely have AutoCAD, but everyone can open a PDF. This page converts DWG files with all their layouts, keeping line weights and the sheet sizes set in the drawing.

What does the PDF contain?

One page per layout tab, drawn as sharp vector lines at the sheet size the drawing specifies, so it can be zoomed, measured by eye and printed to scale.

DWG

DWG drawing

AutoCAD's native drawing format, in use since 1982 for architecture and engineering work. It stores precise 2D and 3D geometry, layers and annotations in a closed format. AutoCAD and compatible CAD programs open it; viewers without CAD support usually need a PDF or image.

PDF document

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

Why convertYou give up an editable drawing with layers and objects for a fixed set of sheets that anyone can open, print and mark up. Send the PDF when the reader needs to look, check or sign, not to change the design.

Architectural and engineering drawings are usually set up on standard sheets: A1 and A3 in most of the world, ARCH and ANSI sizes in the United States. The sheet size and scale live in each layout of the DWG, and with Original selected the converter uses them as the PDF page size. An A1 layout becomes an A1 page, which a print shop can plot at full size, while an office printer can print it scaled down onto A3.

If your drawing has no layouts, or you need a specific size regardless of how it was set up, choose a page size such as A4, A3, Letter or Tabloid under Advanced settings, together with Fit to page or Actual size (1:1).

Each ISO A size is exactly half of the one above it, so a drawing set up for A1 scales down to A3 by printing at 50 percent and stays proportionally correct. That is why many offices issue full-size A1 PDFs and let each recipient decide how to print them.

Layouts and model space

A DWG has two kinds of space. Model space holds the design itself, drawn at real size. Layouts, the tabs at the bottom of AutoCAD's window, are sheets that frame parts of the model through viewports, add a title block and set a scale for printing. A drawing set of ten sheets is often one DWG with ten layouts.

All layouts is preset because that is what people usually need when they send a drawing: the finished sheets, in order, as the designer set them up. Model space is useful for a quick look at the whole design or for drawings that were never given layouts, but it has no title block or fixed scale, and very large models can come out with tiny detail on one page.

Layout
Also called paper space · sheet
A printable sheet inside a DWG that shows the model through one or more scaled viewports, with a title block and notes. This page turns every layout into one PDF page; Model space gives only the drawing area.

Lines and colors in the PDF

CAD drawings depend on line weight to be readable: walls heavier than furniture, section lines heavier than hatching. Use line weights is on, so the weights stored with objects and layers carry into the PDF. Lines stay vectors, which means they remain crisp at any zoom and print cleanly at full size.

Colors keeps the original layer colors by default, which suits screen viewing. For print sets, Monochrome (black lines) turns every line black, the usual way plans are issued, and Grayscale keeps a little distinction between layers. The background is white so the PDF prints as expected.

Sending the PDF

A PDF of a drawing set is what permit portals, clients and contractors ask for, because they can open it in any browser or PDF reader without CAD software. Check the first and last sheet before sending, especially the title block, scale bar and any small text. To pass on an editable copy instead, the DWG to DXF page converts to the exchange format other CAD programs read, and the main CAD Converter has every other output. Uploads are removed after processing and results after 30 minutes.

Large batches are fine: up to 20 DWG files can be converted together, each up to 95 MB, and every drawing becomes its own multi-page PDF named after the original file. If you need one combined PDF for a whole project, join the results afterward with Merge PDF.

How to convert DWG to PDF

  1. Add the DWG drawings

Drop the .dwg files on the box above or press Choose Files. Up to 20 drawings can be converted in one batch.

  2. Check the layout settings

All layouts, Original page size and Use line weights are preset. Choose Model space under Advanced settings if you only want the drawing area.

  3. Convert and share

Press Convert to PDF, download the files and open one to check the sheets before you send them.

DWG to PDF questions

Why does my DWG to PDF have several pages?

This page exports All layouts, and each layout tab in the drawing becomes one PDF page, usually one sheet of a set. Choose Model space under Advanced settings for a single page with only the drawing area.

Is the PDF printed to scale?

With Original page size, each layout keeps the sheet size and scale set up in the drawing, so printing at 100 percent on that paper size gives the correct scale. Fit to page is for viewing; for scaled prints, avoid any "fit" option in the print dialog too.

Why are all lines the same thickness in my PDF?

The drawing may not assign line weights, or they may come from a plot style the converter cannot see. Use line weights is on here and uses the weights stored with the objects and layers. Check the layer settings in the DWG if lines still look uniform.

Can the PDF be edited back into a DWG later?

Not reliably. A PDF keeps lines and text for viewing and printing, not CAD objects with layers and dimensions. Keep the DWG as the master and send the PDF as a copy.

Can I convert drawings to black and white for printing?

Yes. Under Advanced settings, set Colors to Monochrome (black lines) for crisp print sets, or Grayscale to keep some contrast between layers.

My PDF is too big to email. What can I do?

Drawings with embedded photos or hatches can produce large PDFs. Run the result through the Compress PDF tool; the vector lines stay sharp while embedded images are made smaller.
