RAR to ZIP Converter
Repack a RAR archive as a ZIP file that opens on any computer or phone with the tools already built in, keeping the folders inside exactly as they were.

Up to 95 MB each· 20 files at once· Removed after 30 min
Your files are removed from our servers 30 minutes after processing.
Needed only if the archive you upload is password-protected.
Optional password for the converted archive. Leave empty for none. TAR and ISO cannot hold a password.
AES-256 is secure but needs 7-Zip, WinRAR or a similar app to open; the unzip built into Windows and macOS can't read it. ZipCrypto is weak but opens almost anywhere.

- RAR
- Also called Roshal Archive · .rar
- An archive format created by Eugene Roshal and owned by RARLAB, the makers of WinRAR. It compresses well and can split archives into parts, but its format is proprietary and controlled by RARLAB rather than published as an open standard.
Why ZIP opens where RAR does not
RAR files turn up in downloads, game mods, shared course materials and old backups, and they are popular because they compress well and split neatly into parts. Opening one is another matter. Many built-in file tools on computers, tablets and phones handle ZIP but not RAR, so a .rar attachment often means installing an extra app before anyone can see what is inside.
ZIP has the opposite reputation. Its specification has been published by PKWARE for decades in the APPNOTE document, which let every operating system build in support. A double click on a ZIP opens it on almost any device. Converting a RAR to ZIP therefore costs a little file size and removes the obstacle for everyone you send it to.
There is also a practical reason on the receiving side. Upload forms, learning platforms and support portals often accept ZIP attachments and reject RAR, and some company mail filters block archive types they cannot inspect. Sending ZIP avoids those refusals without asking anyone to change their settings.
RAR
RAR archive
A closed archive format Eugene Roshal released in 1993 and RARLAB maintains. It compresses losslessly and can split one archive into several parts with recovery data. Creating RAR files requires WinRAR or a licensed tool, and some systems need an extra app just to extract them.

ZIP
ZIP archive
The archive format Phil Katz created at PKWARE in 1989, now the most common way to bundle files. It compresses files losslessly and keeps folders together in one download or attachment. Windows, macOS, Linux and phones all open it without extra software.

Why convertRAR packs files tightly but needs software that not every device has; ZIP opens with the tools already built into nearly all of them. Convert when a RAR has to reach people or systems that should not need WinRAR or another extra app.
What happens during the conversion
The converter unpacks the RAR on the server and packs every file into a new ZIP. Folder structure is kept, and so are the original modified dates of the files, so a project folder or a photo collection looks the same after unzipping as before. Hidden system entries such as .DS_Store, Thumbs.db and __MACOSX folders are skipped, since they only clutter the archive.
Compression starts at Normal, a good balance of speed and size. Maximum makes text, documents and code smaller at the cost of time; photos and videos are already compressed and barely change at any level. Store packs files without compressing them, which is fastest. The technical layout of the RAR side is described in RARLAB's RAR 5.0 technical note.
If something inside the RAR is damaged, the converter stops with an error rather than producing a ZIP with missing or broken files. RAR archives can carry recovery records for repairing small faults; in that case, repairing the archive in WinRAR first and converting the repaired copy usually works.
How to convert RAR to ZIP
Add the RAR file
Drop the .rar archive on the box above, or press Choose Files. If it has a password, enter it under Current password.
Keep the defaults
ZIP with Normal compression is selected, folders are kept and hidden system files are skipped. Add a New password if the ZIP should be protected.
Convert and download
Press Convert to ZIP, then open the ZIP with a double click or send it on.
RAR to ZIP questions
Can I just rename a .rar file to .zip?
No. The two formats store files differently, so a renamed RAR is still a RAR and any ZIP tool will report it as damaged. Converting unpacks the RAR and packs its contents again as a real ZIP.
How do I convert a RAR split into several parts?
Multi-part archives (.part1.rar, .part2.rar or .r00, .r01 …) only make sense together. Upload every part in the same batch so the converter can read the whole archive; a single part on its own cannot be unpacked.
My RAR has a password. Can it still be converted?
Yes, if you know the password. Type it under Current password. Without it, the files inside are encrypted and cannot be read, by this tool or any other.
Will the ZIP be smaller or larger than the RAR?
Often a little larger, because RAR's compression is usually stronger. With photos, videos and other already compressed files the difference is small. Choose Maximum compression if size matters.
Can I convert the RAR to 7Z or TAR instead?
Yes. The Archive Converter offers 7Z, TAR, TAR.GZ and other formats from the same upload. ZIP remains the best choice when the recipient may not have extra software.
What if I only want the files, not a new archive?
Choose Extract files under Convert to, or use Unzip Online, which opens RAR, ZIP and 7Z archives and lets you save the files one by one.
Large archives
Each uploaded file can be up to 95 MB, and up to 20 files fit in one batch, which also covers multi-part RAR archives whose parts stay under that size. The ZIP that comes out can contain large files: the ZIP64 extension, part of the same PKWARE specification, removes the classic format's size limit shown below, and current unzip tools read it.
If the finished ZIP is meant for email, check its size against the recipient's attachment limit first. A large archive is usually better shared through a cloud drive link, or split into smaller ZIPs by converting the files in groups.
4 GB
The largest single file the original ZIP format can record, because its size fields are 32 bits long.
PKWARE's APPNOTE defines the ZIP64 extension for anything larger, so modern ZIP files can hold bigger files without trouble.
Passwords and security
An encrypted RAR needs its password to be converted; type it under Current password and it is used only for this conversion. The new ZIP has no password unless you set one under New password. When you do, AES-256 encryption is selected, which is strong and opens in current versions of Windows, macOS, 7-Zip and WinRAR. ZipCrypto is offered only for very old unzip tools and is weak.
Uploaded archives are deleted as soon as they are processed and the ZIP is removed 30 minutes after it is ready. Other archive formats, such as 7Z and TAR.GZ, convert through the Archive Converter, and you can bundle loose files into a new ZIP with Zip Files.
Do
- Upload all parts of a split RAR in the same batch.
- Use AES-256 if you add a password to the ZIP.
Avoid
- Renaming .rar to .zip instead of converting it.
- Sending the password in the same email as the protected ZIP.
