The picture is dropped and the sound is kept: an MP3 at 192 kbps that plays on every device that has ever played music.

Why save the sound of a video

Plenty of videos are really audio with a picture attached: a recorded lecture, a podcast episode posted as video, a concert filmed on a phone, a song with a static cover, an interview or a sermon. Keeping the whole MP4 for listening wastes storage and battery, and many players, car stereos and fitness watches will not play video files at all.

Extracting the sound turns that video into a small audio file you can listen to with the screen off, add to a playlist or load onto a device with limited storage. The MP3 is a fraction of the size of the video, because the picture is usually the biggest part of an MP4 by far.

It is also the simplest way to reuse a recording elsewhere. A talk filmed for a website can become a podcast episode, the music from a slideshow can go back into a playlist, and a recorded meeting can go to a transcription tool that only takes audio files.

MP4 video and MP3 audio

MP4

MP4 video

The MPEG-4 Part 14 container, standardized in 2001 and now the default for online video. It usually carries H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, all lossy, plus optional subtitles. Phones, browsers, smart TVs and social platforms all play it.

MP3

MP3 audio

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, developed largely at Fraunhofer IIS and standardized in 1993. Its lossy compression made digital music portable, and it remains the most widely supported audio format. Every phone, car stereo, browser and media player can play it.

Why convertYou give up the picture and keep the soundtrack in the most widely supported audio format there is. Choose MP3 when you only need to listen, or when a player, a car or an app accepts audio files but not video.

MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, standardized by ISO in 1993 as part of ISO/IEC 11172-3. Its age is its strength: every operating system, browser, phone and audio device made in the last two decades plays it. The audio inside an MP4 is usually AAC, a newer codec, and converting re-encodes it to MP3.

Because both are lossy, quality depends on the source and the bitrate. The preset of 192 kbps is high enough that music from a typical video sounds the same as in the original. Going higher rarely helps, since the MP3 cannot hold detail the video's own audio track already discarded.

MP3 is the one format with no gaps anywhere, which is why it is the default output here; M4A and Ogg are available under Convert to if you prefer them.

Browsers are only part of the picture. Car stereos, older MP3 players, smart speakers and many fitness devices read MP3 and little else, while support for M4A and Ogg varies from model to model. If you do not know where the file will end up, MP3 is the safe choice. The Audio Converter can switch formats later without the video.

Sizes follow directly from the bitrate: kilobits per second times sixty seconds, divided by eight bits per byte, gives the size of one minute. A one-hour lecture at 128 kbps is therefore around 58 MB, small enough for any phone. Choose Mono under Channels for speech recordings if you want to halve the size at the lower bitrates.

When in doubt, keep the preset. It suits nearly everything people extract from videos.

Batches, trimming and privacy

You can convert up to 20 MP4 files at a time, each up to 95 MB, and every file gets the same settings. Use Start at and End at to skip an intro or keep a single song. Uploads are deleted after processing and the MP3s 30 minutes later, with no account to create.

For editing the sound in an audio program, an uncompressed file is the better start; MP4 to WAV makes one. Videos from an iPhone in MOV format are handled the same way on MOV to MP3, and every other source format is listed on the Video to Audio tool.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

Drop one or more MP4 files on the box above, or press Choose Files.

  2. Check the bitrate

MP3 at 192 kbps is preset. Choose 128 kbps for speech or 320 kbps for music you want to archive, and set Start at and End at to keep only part of the video.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert and save the MP3 files.

MP4 to MP3 questions

Does the MP3 sound as good as the video's audio?

At 192 kbps most people cannot tell the difference for music. The audio in an MP4 is usually AAC that was already compressed, so a higher MP3 bitrate cannot add quality the video never had.

How do I keep only one song from a long concert video?

Under Advanced settings → Trim, type the start and end times, for example 12:40 and 16:05. The MP3 then holds just that part.

Why choose MP3 rather than keeping AAC as M4A?

M4A keeps the original AAC sound without a second compression and is fine for Apple devices and most phones. MP3 is the format that every player, car stereo and old MP3 player accepts. Pick M4A under Convert to if all your devices play it.

Can I make the volume of a quiet recording louder?

Yes. Tick Normalize volume under Advanced settings to bring the loudness to a standard level, which helps with phone recordings and lectures.

Does the MP3 keep the title of the video?

The MP3 keeps the file name of the video. Add artist, album and cover art in your music player or tag editor after downloading.

Can I convert a video that has several audio languages?

Yes. The first audio track is used by default. Set Audio track to 2 or higher to pick another language or a commentary track.
