What you can transcribe from an MP3
MP3 is the format most recordings end up in. Podcast episodes are published as MP3, many voice recorders and dictation apps save it, lecture recordings are often shared that way, and interviews recorded on a phone are frequently exported as MP3 to keep them small. Getting the words out of those files by hand takes far longer than the recording itself.
Transcription does that work for you. The speech is recognized and written out as text, with punctuation and capital letters added so it reads like sentences rather than a stream of words. A timestamp in front of each paragraph shows where it starts in the recording, which makes checking quotes and names quick.
The result is a plain .txt file. It opens on any device, pastes into a document, an email or a notes app, and can be searched for a word or a name instantly.
The list below shows every file type the transcriber accepts and every output it can write. MP3 is the most common input, but WAV, M4A and video files such as MP4 work on the same page, so you do not need to convert a recording to MP3 first. For other formats in depth, see Audio to Text.

From MP3 audio to a text file
MP3
MP3 audio
MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, developed largely at Fraunhofer IIS and standardized in 1993. Its lossy compression made digital music portable, and it remains the most widely supported audio format. Every phone, car stereo, browser and media player can play it.

TXT
Plain text file
A file that holds characters only, with no fonts, images or layout. Any device and text editor can read it, which makes it the default for notes, logs and configuration. What it gains in reach it loses in formatting, since bold, tables and pictures cannot be stored.

Why convertMP3 to text changes what the file is for: from something you have to listen to, in real time, to something you can read, search and quote in seconds. Pick plain text when the words matter more than layout; for captions on a video, choose SRT or VTT output, and the Subtitle Converter handles them afterwards.
The two formats have nothing in common technically. MP3, standardized as part of ISO/IEC 11172-3, stores compressed sound. A text file stores characters. Transcription bridges the two by recognizing speech, which is why the quality of the recording matters more than anything else.
MP3 compression itself is rarely the problem: at the bit rates used for speech and podcasts, voices stay clear. Background music, several people talking at once, a distant microphone or a noisy room cause far more recognition errors than the format does.
Settings this page starts with
Plain text is the preset output, with timestamps and punctuation switched on and the language set to auto-detect. That suits interviews, lectures and meetings, where you want readable paragraphs and a way back to the audio. Every option can be changed before you convert, and the expandable notes below explain the ones people ask about most.
Other outputs are available from the same upload: a Word document for editing, a PDF for sharing, SRT or VTT subtitles with timings, or JSON with word-level timings for developers.
Choose the Word output if several people will edit the transcript, and the PDF output if it is final and should not be changed.
Speaker labels
Marks each change of speaker as Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on. Useful for interviews and podcasts; leave it off for a single lecturer or a voice memo.
Remove filler words
Drops hesitations such as um and uh for a cleaner read. Leave it off if you need an exact record of what was said, for example for research interviews.
Part to transcribe
Set a start and end time to transcribe only one section of a long recording. To cut the MP3 itself, use Trim Audio.
Language
Auto-detect listens to the first 30 seconds. If the recording opens with music or a jingle, pick the language yourself so detection does not guess wrong.
Getting a cleaner transcript
The best transcript starts with the best recording you have. Use the original file rather than a copy that was compressed again for sharing, and cut long silent stretches or music intros if they are not needed. For a recording that is part of a video, Video to Audio extracts the soundtrack as MP3 first, though this page also accepts MP4 and other video files directly.
Read the transcript once with the audio at hand. Names, technical terms and numbers are the words most likely to need correcting, and the timestamps take you straight to each spot.
You can transcribe up to 20 files per batch, each up to 95 MB. Uploads are deleted after processing and the transcripts 30 minutes later, so download them before you close the page. No account is needed.

MP3 to text questions
How accurate is the MP3 transcription?
It depends mostly on the recording. Clear speech close to the microphone, little background noise and one speaker at a time give the best results. Music, crosstalk, strong echo and heavy compression lower accuracy, so always read the transcript through before you rely on it.
Which languages can MP3 to text recognize?
33 languages, including English, Spanish, Hindi, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Auto-detect listens to the first 30 seconds; choose the language yourself for recordings that start with music or switch languages.
What do the timestamps in the MP3 transcript look like?
Each paragraph starts with the time it begins in the recording, such as [01:15]. That lets you jump to the right spot when you check a quote or a name.
Can I get subtitles instead of plain text from an MP3?
Yes. Choose SRT or VTT under Output to get a subtitle file with timings for each line, which video editors and players can load next to a video.
Can the transcript show who is speaking in an MP3 interview?
Tick Speaker labels under Advanced settings and the transcript marks changes of speaker as Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on. You can replace the labels with real names afterwards.
Is it possible to transcribe just one section of a long MP3 recording?
Yes. Enter a start and end time under Part to transcribe, for example 12:30 to 45:00, and only that section is transcribed.
