Contain shows the whole image with bars, cover fills the frame and crops the edges, blur fills the bars with a blurred copy of the image.
Fills the frame behind a waveform, around a contained image, or the whole video when plain color is chosen.
How the sound is drawn. Bars and spectrum react clearly to music; line suits speech and podcasts.
Color of the waveform drawing, e.g. #FFFFFF on a dark background.
Used when you upload images without audio, or several images with one track: how long each picture stays on screen.
Effect between images when you upload more than one.
192 kbps keeps music clean; uploading platforms re-encode anyway, so higher rarely helps.

Why audio needs a picture to travel
Video platforms are built for video. YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and most messaging apps expect a file with a picture track, so an MP3 on its own either cannot be uploaded or arrives as a file attachment nobody plays. Musicians sharing a track, podcasters posting episodes, teachers sending a recorded lesson and anyone with a voice message to post run into the same wall.
The usual workaround is a video editor: import the audio, drag an image onto the timeline, stretch it to the length of the track and export. It works, but it is a lot of steps for a still picture. This converter does exactly that in one pass: the image fills the frame for the whole track, and the MP3 becomes the soundtrack.
The cards above show image sizes that YouTube and Instagram publish for thumbnails and landscape posts. Their shapes are the ones that matter here: 16:9 for YouTube's widescreen player, 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok. A cover prepared at one of those sizes doubles as the video's thumbnail, and the video size setting offers the same 16:9 and 9:16 frames, plus square and 4:5 for feed posts.
MP3 audio and MP4 video
MP3
MP3 audio
MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, developed largely at Fraunhofer IIS and standardized in 1993. Its lossy compression made digital music portable, and it remains the most widely supported audio format. Every phone, car stereo, browser and media player can play it.

MP4
MP4 video
The MPEG-4 Part 14 container, standardized in 2001 and now the default for online video. It usually carries H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, all lossy, plus optional subtitles. Phones, browsers, smart TVs and social platforms all play it.

Why convertIn this direction the file gains a picture track it never had, so it can go where only video is accepted. Convert an MP3 to MP4 to publish audio on video platforms; keep the MP3 for music players and podcast feeds.
YouTube's recommended upload settings list an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, which is what this page produces. A still image compresses extremely well as video, so most of the MP4's size is the sound itself, and the file stays close to the size of the MP3.
The audio is stored as AAC at 192 kbps by default, the bitrate where an MP3 source sounds unchanged. Platforms encode uploads again on their side, so going higher than that rarely makes an audible difference after publishing.
Choosing the picture and the frame
Album covers are square, and a square image in a 16:9 frame leaves space at the sides. Blurred fill, the preset, fills that space with a softened copy of the cover, which looks finished on a TV or a laptop. Contain uses a solid background color instead, and Cover enlarges the image until it fills the frame, cropping the top and bottom.
No image to hand? Set Show to Waveform for an animated drawing of the sound, in bars, a line, a circle or a spectrum, or to Plain color for a simple background. A waveform gives viewers something moving to look at, which helps on social feeds where a still frame is easy to scroll past.
Check the image's resolution before converting. A small cover, such as a 500-pixel thumbnail saved from a website, looks soft when it is stretched across a 1080p frame. Use the largest version of the artwork you have, ideally at least as tall as the video frame, so text and fine lines stay crisp on a large screen.
Publishing the video
Upload the MP4 like any other video. On YouTube, the cover image doubles as a sensible default thumbnail; you can still upload a separate thumbnail in YouTube Studio. For a vertical post, switch the size to 9:16 before converting so the cover is placed for a phone screen rather than cropped by the app.
Add the track's details in the platform's own fields rather than in the picture: title, artist, episode number and links belong in the title and description, where people can search and click them.
You can convert up to 20 files in a batch, each up to 95 MB. Uploads are deleted after processing and the videos 30 minutes later. To go the other way and pull the sound out of a video, use MP4 to MP3; the Audio to Video page also turns a set of photos into a slideshow with music, and the Audio Converter changes audio formats without adding a picture.
How to convert MP3 to MP4
Add the MP3 and an image
Drop the MP3 and a JPG or PNG cover on the box above together. Without an image, choose Waveform or Plain color under Show.
Check the frame
1920 × 1080 with a Blurred fill behind the image is preset. Pick 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for Shorts, Reels or TikTok.
Convert and upload
Press Convert, download the MP4 and upload it like any other video.
MP3 to MP4 questions
What does Blurred fill mean for my cover image?
A square cover does not fill a 16:9 frame. With Blurred fill, the empty sides are filled with a blurred, enlarged copy of the image, so there are no black bars. Contain shows bars instead, and Cover crops the image to fill the frame.
Is the MP3 re-encoded inside the video?
The sound is stored as AAC at the bitrate you choose, 192 kbps by default, which is the audio format MP4 players and upload sites expect. At that rate the result sounds like the MP3 you started with.
Can I use a waveform instead of a still picture?
Yes. Set Show to Waveform and choose a style and color. The waveform moves with the sound, which suits podcasts and voice clips posted to social apps.
How long can the audio be?
Any length that fits the upload limit of 95 MB per file. A one-hour MP3 at 128 kbps is under 60 MB, so most podcast episodes and albums fit.
Can I make one video from several tracks?
Combine the tracks into one audio file first, then convert it here with a single cover. Each MP3 you upload otherwise becomes its own video.
Which image works best as the cover?
A square image of at least 1080 × 1080 pixels for album art, or a 16:9 image of 1920 × 1080 to fill a widescreen frame without any fill. Text on the image should sit away from the edges.
