Image to Word Converter

A picture of a page cannot be edited, searched or copied from. This page reads the text in any image and writes it into a Word document that keeps headings, paragraphs and tables where they were.

300 dpi

the resolution at which OCR engines read printed text most reliably

The documentation of Tesseract, a widely used open-source OCR engine, says it works best on images of at least 300 dpi. A clear phone photo of a page usually has enough pixels for that.

What becomes editable in Word

Optical character recognition, or OCR, looks at the shapes in a picture and decides which letters they are. Plain text output stops there. Word output goes a step further: the converter also works out how the text is arranged on the page, which lines form a paragraph, where a heading sits, which blocks are columns and which grid of words is a table, and writes all of that into the document as real Word structure.

With Preserve layout, the default here, the document is built to look like the original page, with text boxes and columns where the source had them. Plain text flow writes everything as one continuous column instead, which is easier to edit if you plan to reformat the document anyway. Keep pictures places photos, logos and diagrams from the image into the Word file at the same position, so a scanned leaflet keeps its illustrations.

Up to 20 images can go through in one batch, each becoming its own Word file with the same name as the picture, so a stack of scanned pages stays in order when you open the results.

Paragraphs and headings
Running text becomes editable paragraphs; larger or bold lines are kept as headings.
Tables
Ruled and evenly spaced tables become Word tables you can type into and resize.
Pictures
Photos, logos and diagrams are cut out and placed back where they were on the page.
Columns
Two- and three-column layouts, such as newsletters, keep their reading order.

Getting a clean result

Recognition depends far more on the picture than on any setting. Sharp focus, even light and a straight angle matter most: a page photographed at an angle has letters that get smaller toward one edge, and a shadow across the paper hides strokes. Hold the phone parallel to the page, fill the frame with the document and avoid using the flash, which can wash out part of the text.

Choose the language before you start. The recognizer uses it to decide between similar shapes, and a page in Spanish read as English loses its accents and some words. Mixed-language documents can add a second language under Advanced settings. Enhance contrast helps with faded receipts, pencil notes and gray photocopies, while clean scans need nothing extra.

Handwriting is the exception to most of this advice. Printed text follows fixed letter shapes, while every person writes differently, so expect far more corrections on handwritten notes. The Text type setting has a handwriting mode for those pages, and the handwriting to text page is preset for it.

How to convert an image to Word

  1. Upload the images

Drop JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, TIFF or other pictures on the box above, or press Choose Files. Each image becomes its own Word file.

  2. Check the language

The output is set to Word (.docx) with Preserve layout and Keep pictures on. Pick the document's language if it is not English.

  3. Recognize and download

Press Recognize text and download the .docx files. Open each one and read it through before you rely on it.

Image to Word questions

Will the Word file look exactly like my picture?

Close, but not identical. Text, headings, paragraphs, columns and simple tables are rebuilt as real Word content, and pictures are placed back where they were. Fonts are matched to similar ones, so line breaks can shift slightly.

Can I edit tables after converting an image to Word?

Yes. Tables with clear lines or regular spacing are rebuilt as Word tables, so you can type in the cells, add rows and change widths. Tables with merged cells or no borders sometimes come out as tab-separated text that needs tidying.

Does it work with a photo taken on my phone?

Yes, as long as the page is in focus, evenly lit and taken from straight above. Straighten pages and Auto rotate are on by default to correct small tilts and sideways shots.

How do I convert several pictures into one Word document?

Each image produces its own .docx. To get one document, combine the images into a PDF first with the Image to PDF tool, then run the PDF through this page with Word as the output.

Can I open the result in Google Docs or LibreOffice?

Yes. A .docx file is an open standard that Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and Microsoft Word all open. Upload it to Google Drive and choose to open it with Google Docs if you prefer to edit there.

Why Word, and when to pick another output

Word's .docx format is a published standard, which is why so many programs open and edit it. Use it when the text has to be corrected, reused or reformatted: a contract you need to amend, a printed form you want to fill in again, or an old document that only exists on paper. The structure the converter rebuilds saves you from retyping and from rebuilding tables by hand.

When you only need the words, plain text is faster and has nothing to clean up. When the page should stay exactly as it looks but become searchable, a searchable PDF keeps the original image and adds an invisible text layer. Both are options of the same tool on the main Image to Text page, and OCR PDF is preset for the PDF case.

Checking the document

No recognizer is perfect, and the errors it makes are the kind spell checkers miss: a 1 read as l, a 0 as O, a decimal point dropped from a price. Read numbers, names and dates against the original before you send the document anywhere. Word's own spell check catches many of the remaining slips in ordinary words.

Your images are removed once processing finishes and the Word files are deleted 30 minutes later. No account is needed, and the documents are never used for anything else.
