Handwriting to Text
This page reads handwriting in photos and scans and writes it out as plain text. It works best on neat, separate letters; joined or hurried writing comes through only in part, so treat the result as a draft to correct.

- Handwriting recognition
- Also called HTR · handwritten text recognition
- Reading text written by hand, as opposed to printed type. Every writer forms letters differently, so it is far less predictable than ordinary OCR, and its output should always be checked against the original.
What to expect from handwriting
Printed text is made of fixed letter shapes. Once a recognizer knows a typeface, an a looks the same every time it appears. Handwriting has no such rule: the same person writes an a in several ways on one page, letters are joined or overlap, and words slope, crowd toward the margin or run over ruled lines. A recognizer has to guess from context much more often, and some guesses will be wrong.
So the honest description of this tool is a fast first draft. On neat notes written in separate letters, the draft can be nearly complete. On a page of quick joined writing, it may get the gist and miss many words. Either way it is usually quicker to correct the draft than to type everything again, but it does not replace reading the original. The ruler below shows how common styles tend to fare.
How handwriting styles tend to fare
- ShorthandPersonal abbreviations and symbols. Mostly unreadable to a machine; expect to type these yourself.
- HurriedFast joined script with letters running together. Some words come through; many need correcting.
- CursiveNeat, evenly joined writing. A usable draft with regular corrections.
- PrintSeparate lowercase letters with clear spaces between words. Usually a good draft.Recommended
- CapitalsBlock capitals, as on forms. The most reliable kind of handwriting to convert.Recommended
Settings preset on this page
Text type is switched to Handwriting, which tells the recognizer to expect irregular, joined shapes instead of type. Enhance contrast is on because notes are often written in pencil or blue ink on lined or colored paper, and pushing the ink toward black and the paper toward white makes the strokes easier to separate from the lines.
The output is plain text. Handwritten pages rarely have columns or tables worth rebuilding, and a .txt file is the quickest thing to correct, paste into a notes app or search. If you do want a document, choose Word under Output; for a scan that stays an image but becomes searchable, choose a searchable PDF.
Choosing the right language matters more for handwriting than for print. The recognizer leans on the words it expects in that language to settle ambiguous shapes, so notes in French read as English lose accents and get replaced with similar English words. For notes that mix two languages, add the second one under Advanced settings.

Press Recognize text, open the .txt file next to the photo and fix the words that were misread.
Handwriting to text questions
How accurate is handwriting recognition?
It varies far more than with print, because it depends on the writer. Clear block letters can come through almost intact; fast joined writing may need many words corrected or retyped. We do not quote an accuracy figure, since any single number would be misleading for your particular handwriting.
Can it read cursive?
Partly. Neat, evenly joined cursive is recognized better than hurried script where letters run into each other. Expect to correct a good share of the words, and keep the photo next to the text while you do.
Will it read my doctor's prescription?
Do not rely on it for that. Abbreviations, drug names and quick medical handwriting are among the hardest cases, and a misread dose is dangerous. Ask the pharmacy or the prescriber instead.
Can I convert handwritten notes into Word?
Yes. Change Output to Word (.docx). Plain text is the default here because handwritten notes rarely have a layout worth keeping, and plain text is quicker to correct.
Does it read handwriting in other languages?
Choose the language under Document language. Handwriting recognition is hardest in scripts with many similar characters, and results vary more between languages than for printed text.
Should I use Printed mode for a typed form filled in by hand?
If most of the page is printed and only a few boxes are handwritten, Printed mode reads the form text better, and the handwritten answers may need retyping. If the handwriting is what you need, use Handwriting mode.
Photographing notes for better results
With handwriting, the photo matters even more than with print, because faint or broken strokes are what make letters ambiguous. The points below help most. If you are writing something you already know you will convert, such as meeting notes or a form, writing in separate letters with a dark pen makes a bigger difference than any setting.
Scanning is not always better than a phone photo here. A flatbed scanner gives even light, but its default resolution may be low; 300 dpi is a sensible minimum for small handwriting.
Do
- Use a dark pen or a soft, dark pencil, and photograph in daylight without shadows across the page.
- Photograph one page at a time, filling the frame, with the camera held flat above the paper.
Avoid
- Photographing notebook pages that curve toward the spine; the words near the fold narrow and blur.
- Relying on the text for medicines, legal deadlines or money without checking every figure by eye.
When a different approach is better
For pages that are mostly printed with a few handwritten entries, switch Text type back to Printed, or use the main Image to Text page, which starts in printed mode. For documents you need to edit with layout intact, the image to Word page keeps paragraphs and tables.
Some handwriting will always be beyond a machine, such as old family letters in faded ink or notes full of private abbreviations. For those, the converted text can still help as an index of the words that were recognized, so you can find the right page later, while the reading itself stays with you.
