What happens to my photo?

Every color is replaced by a shade of gray of matching brightness. The picture, its size and its format stay the same; only the color is gone.

Why convert photos to black and white

Removing color changes what a viewer notices. Without it, light, shape, texture and expression carry the picture, which is why black and white suits portraits, architecture, street scenes and old family photos that have faded unevenly. It also hides problems: mixed lighting that tints skin orange on one side and blue on the other, a distracting red sign in the background, or a white balance the camera got wrong.

There are practical reasons too. Images printed on a black-and-white laser printer look more predictable when they are already grayscale, because you see the result before printing. Newsletters, school handouts, theater programs and forms often call for grayscale pictures, and a consistent set of black-and-white photos gives a website or a portfolio a uniform look.

Converting a copy also lets you compare. Put the gray version next to the color original and you will quickly see which pictures gain from losing their color and which ones depended on it, such as sunsets, flowers or food. Many photographers convert a whole shoot this way, then keep the black and white only for the frames where it works.

How the colors become grays

A color photo stores each pixel as a mix of red, green and blue. Converting to grayscale replaces that mix with a single brightness value. The eye does not see the three colors as equally bright, green looks lightest and blue darkest, so the conversion weights them accordingly instead of averaging them. A bright green lawn and a deep blue sky therefore become different grays, as they would look to you, rather than the same flat tone.

The diagram shows the path every image takes. The file is decoded into pixels, the effect is applied to those pixels, and the result is encoded again in the chosen format with the quality and metadata settings on the right.

From color file to grayscale file

The source image is decoded into raw pixels, each pixel's color is turned into a gray of the same perceived brightness, and the pixels are encoded again as a new file. Quality, size and metadata options apply at that last step.

Batches, formats and limits

Every image in a batch gets exactly the same treatment, which is what you want for a series of product shots, a photo story or a set of team portraits. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF are accepted. With Same as input, each picture keeps its format: a PNG stays a PNG with its transparency, a JPG stays a JPG. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP under Output to convert them all to one format in the same step. iPhone HEIC photos are best saved as JPG for sharing.

Auto orient reads the rotation stored by phones and cameras, so every photo comes out upright, and Strip metadata removes location and camera details by default. The limits below apply to each batch.

Getting a better black and white

Some photos look flat once the color is gone, because their colors were different but their brightness was similar: a red apple on green leaves can turn into one gray mass. Running the black-and-white images through the effect again with More contrast separates the tones, and Sharpen brings back crispness in detailed scenes. Each effect is a separate pass, so you can try one, look at the result and decide whether to add another.

Keep the color originals. Black and white is a creative choice that cannot be undone on the converted file, and the color version may be needed later. Other looks, such as sepia, blur or pixelation, are in Image Effects, and photos that need to be smaller for an upload can go through Compress Image afterwards. For a whole document, use PDF to Grayscale.

Scanned documents are a different case from photos. A grayscale scan of a letter or receipt keeps soft edges and paper texture, which is what you want for an archive copy; if a form asks for a pure black-and-white scan, raise the contrast strongly so the paper turns nearly white and the text nearly black.

How to make an image black and white

  1. Add your images

Drop JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or other images on the box above, or press Choose Files. Up to 20 fit in one batch.

  2. Keep Black & white selected

The Black & white effect is preset and the output stays in the same format as each input. Pick JPG, PNG or WebP under Output to change that.

  3. Apply and download

Press the button to apply the effect, then save each image or download all of them together.

Black and white image questions

Is the result pure black and white or grayscale?

Grayscale. Each pixel becomes a shade of gray between black and white, which is what people usually mean by a black-and-white photo. The tool does not reduce images to only two colors, as a fax or a line-art scan would.

Can I make the black and white look stronger?

Run the converted images through the effect again with More contrast selected. Higher contrast deepens the blacks and brightens the whites, which suits portraits and street photos.

Will my PNG keep its transparent background?

Yes. With the output left as Same as input, a PNG stays a PNG and transparent areas stay transparent; only the colored pixels turn gray.

Does it change the file size?

A little. A grayscale image holds less color information, so a JPG often gets slightly smaller at the same quality. Quality starts at 85 and can be changed under Output.

Can I turn a whole PDF black and white?

Yes, but with a different tool: PDF to Grayscale converts every page of a PDF, including text and pictures, in one go.

Is the location data removed from my photos?

Yes, by default. Strip metadata removes GPS position and camera details. Untick it under Advanced settings to keep them.
