the default black-and-white threshold, on a scale from 1 to 254

Pixels darker than the threshold turn black, lighter ones turn white. Move it up to keep faint text, down to clean a gray background.

Why take the color out

Color is not always welcome in a document. Office printers charge more per page for color, and many print rooms default to black and white anyway, which can turn a colored chart into a muddle of similar grays that you never got to check. Converting first lets you see exactly how the document will look on paper, and fix anything that no longer reads well.

Some systems ask for grayscale outright. Fax services work in black and white, a number of court and government e-filing portals prefer files without color, and archives often keep text documents in grayscale to save space. Scans of black-and-white paperwork frequently arrive in color because the scanner defaulted to it, which wastes space and can tint the paper yellow or blue.

File size is the third reason. A color image stores three channels per pixel, a gray image stores one, and a black-and-white image needs even less. Removing color from a scanned contract or a photo-heavy report usually makes it noticeably lighter, without touching its resolution.

Every color becomes a shade of gray based on its brightness. Photos, shading and gradients keep their detail, and the page looks like a black-and-white print.

  • Good for photos and charts
  • Keeps soft edges and shading
  • Contrast helps faded scans

Grayscale, black and white, and the threshold

Grayscale maps each color to a gray of similar brightness. A dark blue heading becomes dark gray, a yellow highlight becomes a pale gray, and a photo keeps all of its tones. This is the safe choice for most documents, especially anything with pictures, charts or shaded table rows.

Black & white goes further and leaves only two values. For each pixel, the tool compares its brightness with the Threshold: darker pixels become black, lighter ones white. The default sits in the middle of the scale. Raise it when light print, pencil notes or faint stamps vanish; lower it when the paper background turns into gray speckles. The right value depends on the scan, so try the default first and adjust from there.

Black and white is excellent for typed or printed text. The result prints crisply on any printer, looks clean on screen and produces the smallest files. It is a poor fit for photos, which lose their midtones and look like a photocopy of a photocopy. If a document mixes text with photos, grayscale is the better compromise.

Colors that differ only in hue can end up as the same gray. A red line and a green line of similar brightness, or a chart that tells its series apart by color alone, may become hard to read. Check charts and color-coded tables after converting, and if a legend no longer works, keep those pages in color with a page range.

Tuning scans and images

Contrast works on images and scanned pages. Zero keeps the original tones. Positive values darken the text and lighten the background, which brings back old or faded documents, receipts printed on thermal paper, and pages scanned under poor light. Negative values soften harsh scans. Change it in small steps; strong contrast can swallow thin lines.

Reduce image resolution lowers the resolution of large images while converting, down to the dpi you set. It is useful when a document will only be read on screen or printed on an office printer, and it adds to the size saving from removing color. Leave it off when the PDF goes to a print shop or contains detailed drawings.

Pages limits the conversion to the pages you choose, for example to remove color from scanned attachments while keeping a colored cover page. Page numbers are positions in the file, starting at 1, which may differ from the numbers printed in the footer.

If the converted file is still too large for an upload form, run it through Compress PDF with a target size. Grayscale pages compress well, because there is less information in each image to keep, so the size target is often reached without lowering the image quality much.

Where grayscale PDFs are used

Printing. Converting before printing shows what a black-and-white printer will produce, and the Images only scope saves the most ink on photo-heavy pages while keeping colored headings. Fax and e-filing. Fax is a black-and-white medium, and a clean black-and-white PDF arrives more legibly than a color one reduced by the fax system, while some court and government portals ask for documents without color.

Archiving. Grayscale keeps scanned records readable and lighter to store, which adds up over thousands of pages. Reading on e-ink. E-readers show shades of gray, so converting first avoids surprises with colored text that turns faint.

Sharing forms. A completed form that will be printed, signed and scanned back by someone else is easier to handle in black and white, since the return scan is usually monochrome too.

Converting the text and images keeps the PDF a PDF: pages stay pages, text stays searchable, and nothing is turned into pictures. To get images of the pages instead, PDF to Image also has grayscale and black-and-white color modes. And when the goal is mainly a smaller file for upload or email, the compression tool has its own Convert to grayscale switch next to its size settings, which does both jobs in one pass.

Before and after converting

A few quick checks make the result better. Straighten sideways scans with Rotate PDF before converting, so you can judge the contrast on upright pages. If the file is protected with a password, unlock it first with the password you know, convert it, and add protection again if it needs it.

After converting, open the file and look at the pages that matter most: signatures, stamps, charts and anything printed in pale colors. Those are the places where a different threshold or a little more contrast makes a difference. Converting again from the color original is always better than adjusting a copy that was already converted, so keep the original until you are happy with the result.

Several files in one batch all get the same mode and settings. A document that needs black and white and another that needs grayscale should go through separately.

Removing color from a PDF in three steps

  1. Add the PDF

Drop up to 20 PDFs on the box above or press Choose Files.

  2. Choose a color mode

Choose Grayscale to keep shades or Black & white for pure black and white. Limit the change to images, text or a page range if needed.

  3. Convert and download

Press the convert button and save the PDF without color.

PDF to grayscale questions

What is the difference between grayscale and black and white?

Grayscale keeps every shade from white to black, so photos and shaded charts still look natural. Black and white leaves only two values per pixel, which prints crisply and suits text scans, but turns photos into high-contrast graphics.

Will the text stay selectable?

Yes. Text remains real text in its new color, so you can still search, select and copy it. Only the color information changes.

Faint text disappeared in black and white mode. What should I change?

Raise the Threshold. Pixels lighter than the threshold become white, so a higher value keeps pale pencil marks and light print. If the background turns speckled, lower it a little.

Can I keep a colored logo or links while converting photos?

Yes. Set Convert to Images only. Photos and scanned images lose their color, while text, links and vector graphics keep theirs.

Does grayscale make my PDF smaller?

Often, for scans and photo-heavy files, because a gray image stores one channel instead of three. Turning on Reduce image resolution helps further. For a size target, use the Compress PDF tool.

Can I convert only a few pages?

Yes. Under Pages, choose Selected pages and type page numbers or ranges separated by commas, such as 1-4, 9. Other pages keep their color.

How long do you keep my PDF?

The upload is removed when processing ends and the converted file is deleted after 30 minutes. No account is needed, and files are not shared.
