WebM to MP4 Converter

Turn WebM screen recordings, webcam clips and web downloads into MP4 files with H.264 video, so they open in video editors, on TVs and in messaging apps, not only in a browser.

Browsers play both formats, so the gaps show up elsewhere: in desktop editors, TVs, older phones and messaging apps, which mostly expect MP4.

Where WebM files come from

WebM was designed for the web, and it is still mostly made there. Browser-based screen recorders, webcam tools and online meeting apps often save WebM, because browsers can encode it without extra components. Videos saved from some websites arrive as WebM too, since the format is free to use and streams efficiently.

Inside the browser that is no problem: as the grid above shows, current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all play it. The trouble starts when the recording leaves the browser. A video editor may not import it, a smart TV may not list it on a USB stick, and a messaging app may send it as a file instead of a playable video.

WebM and MP4 compared

WEBM

WebM video

An open video format Google launched in 2010 for HTML5 playback. It pairs VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio and can carry an alpha channel for transparent overlays. Browsers play it, and screen recorders often save to it, but many editors and phones prefer MP4.

MP4

MP4 video

The MPEG-4 Part 14 container, standardized in 2001 and now the default for online video. It usually carries H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, all lossy, plus optional subtitles. Phones, browsers, smart TVs and social platforms all play it.

Why convertYou trade WebM's efficient, browser-native codecs for the H.264 and AAC pairing that desktop software, TVs and phones play everywhere. Convert in this direction when a recording has to leave the browser and work in other apps.

The WebM project FAQ describes WebM files as VP8 or VP9 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. Those codecs are excellent, but much video software and hardware was built around H.264, the codec that MP4 almost always carries. Converting swaps the codecs and the container in one step.

Expect a somewhat larger file, because H.264 needs more bytes than VP9 for the same picture. For screen recordings with large flat areas the difference is often modest; for camera footage it can be bigger. Lowering Resolution to 1080p or 720p is the quickest way back to a compact file.

Screen recordings and frame rates

Browser recorders sometimes write WebM files with a variable frame rate, dropping frames when nothing moves on screen. Some editors and players handle that badly, so audio drifts or the timeline shows the wrong length. The MP4 written here keeps the source frame rate by default, and Frame rate under Advanced settings can fix it to 30 fps when an editor needs a constant rate.

Long recordings are often bigger than they need to be. If you only need part of a meeting or tutorial, set Start at and End at under Trim and convert just that section; the file is smaller and quicker to share.

Sending the recording to other people

Once the recording is an MP4, the usual ways of sharing video work again. Email services show it as a playable attachment if it fits their size limit, cloud drives generate a preview so viewers do not have to download it, and chat apps on phones play it inline instead of offering a file to save.

Size limits are the next thing to watch. Email has tight caps: Gmail allows 25 MB of attachments per message, and Outlook's limit for internet accounts is 20 MB, which a few minutes of full-HD screen recording can exceed. For anything longer, upload the MP4 to a cloud drive and send the link, or reduce the resolution before converting. A tutorial recorded at 1440p is usually still sharp at 1080p, because text on screen stays readable at that size.

If the recording is going into an editor such as a course platform or a slide deck, MP4 is also what those tools import most reliably, so converting once saves trouble at every later step.

Batches, limits and the reverse direction

Each batch takes up to 20 WebM files, each up to 95 MB, and every file gets the same settings. Uploaded files are removed after processing and the MP4s 30 minutes later, with no account to create.

Going the other way, MP4 to WebM prepares video for embedding on a website. The Video Converter handles every other pairing, and Video to Audio keeps only the sound of a recording, such as the voice track of a meeting.

How to convert WebM to MP4

  1. Add the WebM files

Drop one or more .webm files on the box above, or press Choose Files.

  2. Keep the MP4 settings

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is preset. Use Advanced settings to trim the recording or lower the resolution.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert and save the MP4 files to share, edit or upload.

WebM to MP4 questions

Why do my screen recordings save as WebM?

Many browser-based recorders and web meeting tools save WebM, because browsers can encode it natively without extra licenses. The file plays fine in Chrome or Firefox but not in every desktop app.

My WebM file plays in Chrome but not in my video editor. Why?

Browsers ship with the VP8, VP9 and Opus decoders that WebM uses. Many editors, TVs and older players are built around H.264 and AAC instead. Converting to MP4 gives them the codecs they expect.

Is any quality lost when converting WebM to MP4?

The video is encoded again with H.264, so it is not identical bit for bit, but at the default setting the difference is not visible for screen recordings or camera clips.

Why is the MP4 larger than the WebM?

VP9 can store a picture in fewer bytes than H.264. The extra size buys compatibility. If you need a smaller file, lower Resolution or use Compress Video afterwards.

Does the MP4 keep the audio of my recording?

Yes. Opus or Vorbis audio from the WebM is converted to AAC, the audio format MP4 players expect. Tick Remove audio if you need a silent clip.

Can I cut out the start of a screen recording while converting?

Yes. Under Advanced settings → Trim, enter a Start at time, for example 0:05, to skip the moment where you clicked the record button.
