Lower is better quality and a bigger file. 18 looks identical to the source, 23 is the default, 28 and above shows visible softening.
Frames per second. Keep the source rate unless a platform asks for a specific one; 15–20 fps is plenty for GIFs.
Only used for PowerPoint files and single still images: how long each slide or picture stays on screen.
Auto uses AAC for MP4/MOV and Opus for WebM. Copy keeps the original sound untouched when the new format supports it.
192 kbps is transparent for music; 128 kbps is enough for speech.
Width of the animation in pixels; height follows the aspect ratio. 480 px suits chats, 720 px or more gives a high-quality GIF but a much larger file.
GIF holds at most 256 colors. Fewer colors make a smaller file but cause banding on gradients and skin tones.
Mixes palette colors in a fine pattern to hide banding. Sierra gives the smoothest result; none gives the smallest file.
Whether the animation repeats endlessly or plays one time and stops.
Optional. Seconds (e.g. 75) or minutes:seconds (1:15). Leave empty to start at the beginning.
Optional. Same format as the start time. Leave empty to keep everything up to the end.
The converted file will be at or just under this size.

- WebM
- Also called .webm · video/webm
- An open video format started by Google in 2010 for the web, holding VP8 or VP9 video and Vorbis or Opus audio. Google does not charge royalties for these codecs, which is why the format is common in browsers and open-source software.
Why websites use WebM
A video on your own website is delivered thousands of times, so every megabyte saved adds up. WebM's VP9 codec stores the same picture in fewer bytes than the H.264 codec most MP4 files use, which means faster starts and less bandwidth, especially for large hero videos and product loops.
The other reason is licensing. The WebM project FAQ states that Google does not demand royalties for the codecs WebM supports. That matters for open-source projects and for anyone who prefers to avoid patent-encumbered formats on their own platform.
WebM is a web format first. For sending a clip to someone, posting on social media or playing it on a TV, MP4 remains the more practical choice; the usual setup on a site is to offer both.
MP4 and WebM compared
MP4
MP4 video
The MPEG-4 Part 14 container, standardized in 2001 and now the default for online video. It usually carries H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, all lossy, plus optional subtitles. Phones, browsers, smart TVs and social platforms all play it.

WEBM
WebM video
An open video format Google launched in 2010 for HTML5 playback. It pairs VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio and can carry an alpha channel for transparent overlays. Browsers play it, and screen recorders often save to it, but many editors and phones prefer MP4.

Why convertIn this direction you give up MP4's universal reach outside the browser and gain an open, royalty-free file that is usually smaller for the same quality. Convert to WebM for the HTML5 player on your own site, and keep the MP4 next to it.
The converter writes VP9 video and Opus audio. Resolution and frame rate stay as they are unless you change them, so a 1080p MP4 becomes a 1080p WebM. Encoding VP9 takes longer than encoding H.264, so a long clip can take noticeably more time than an MP4 conversion of the same length.
Quality is set by the same scale used for every video conversion on the site, where lower numbers mean better quality and bigger files. The default is a sensible middle for web playback. For a hero video that sits behind text, you can go a step lower in quality without anyone noticing, because the picture is partly covered and constantly moving.
How WebM started
WebM milestones
Google announced WebM in 2010 together with VP8 support in Chromium, and later added VP9 as a more efficient successor. Over the following decade every major browser engine added support, with Safari among the last. Today WebM plays in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, which makes it a dependable second source for site video.
A newer codec, AV1, is also used in WebM files by some sites, and it compresses even better than VP9. It takes much longer to encode and older hardware decodes it slowly, so VP9 remains the practical choice for most websites today.
Embedding WebM with an MP4 fallback
HTML for a video with a WebM and an MP4 source
<video controls width="1280"><source src="clip.webm" type="video/webm"><source src="clip.mp4" type="video/mp4"></video>The browser tries the sources in order and plays the first one it can decode, so listing WebM first and MP4 second gives modern browsers the smaller file and everything else a working fallback. MDN's video element reference explains the attributes, including muted, loop and playsinline for background clips.
Give both files the same dimensions and the same poster image so the page layout does not jump, whichever source the browser picks. If you host video on a content delivery network, upload both files there and keep the file names parallel, for example intro.webm and intro.mp4, so they are easy to update together later.
Batch conversion and other formats
Converting a whole library is a common job when a site is redesigned. Each MP4 becomes a WebM with the same name, so you can upload the new files beside the old ones and add the extra source line to each page.
Convert up to 20 MP4 files at once, each up to 95 MB. Uploads are removed after processing and the WebM files 30 minutes later. For a short silent loop, an animated format may also work: Video to GIF makes GIFs, although a muted WebM loop is usually far smaller. To go back from WebM to MP4, use WebM to MP4, and the Video Converter covers every other pairing.
How to convert MP4 to WebM
Add the MP4 videos
Drop the clips on the box above, or press Choose Files. A batch takes up to 20 files.
Keep WebM as the output
WebM with Opus audio is preset. For a silent background clip, tick Remove audio under Advanced settings.
Convert and upload
Press Convert, download the .webm files and upload them next to the MP4 on your site.
MP4 to WebM questions
Do I still need WebM if every browser plays MP4?
Not strictly. Current browsers play H.264 MP4. WebM is worth adding when you want a royalty-free format, a smaller file at the same quality with VP9, or a second source for older browsers that lack H.264.
Which codecs does the WebM file use?
VP9 for the picture and Opus for the sound. Both are the codecs the WebM project lists for the format, and every current browser decodes them.
Can I use a WebM as a muted background video?
Yes. Tick Remove audio before converting, then use the autoplay, muted, loop and playsinline attributes on the video element. Browsers only autoplay video without sound.
Will WebM play on an iPhone?
Safari on current iPhones plays WebM, as the support grid on this page shows. Older iOS versions do not, which is one reason to keep an MP4 source as a fallback.
Can I upload WebM to social networks?
Some accept it, many prefer MP4. WebM is mainly a format for your own website; for social media and messaging, keep the MP4.
How do I keep the WebM small for a hero video?
Lower Resolution to 720p or 1080p and trim the clip to the seconds you need with Start at and End at. Short, muted loops of a few seconds load quickly even on mobile data.
