Character that separates columns in CSV and text files, for both reading and writing. Auto detects it from the input and writes commas.
UTF-8 works for every language. Choose UTF-8 with BOM if Excel on Windows shows garbled accents or Asian characters when opening the CSV.
Excel, ODS and Numbers input: convert the first sheet only, or every sheet (one CSV per sheet in a ZIP, or one JSON key per sheet).
Name of the sheet tab in the new spreadsheet, up to 31 characters.
Array of objects uses column names as keys for every row; array of arrays is more compact and keeps the header as the first array.
Name of the outer element that wraps all rows; each row becomes a <row> inside it.
Used in CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements. Letters, digits and underscores only.
Quoting and column types differ slightly between databases; pick the one you will import into.
Rewrite date cells in one format. ISO (2026-10-18) is safest for databases and code; keep leaves them as they appear in the source.

Will my CSV columns line up in Excel?
Yes. The converter detects the delimiter from the file, so comma, semicolon and tab files all split into proper columns, and spaces around each value are trimmed.

Why not just open the CSV in Excel
A CSV file is plain text: one record per line, values separated by a character, usually a comma. Every spreadsheet can open one, which is why banks, online shops, payroll services and databases export them. But opening a CSV is a guess. The spreadsheet has to decide which character separates the columns, which text encoding the file uses and what type each value is, and it often decides wrong.
The results are familiar: a whole file packed into column A because it uses semicolons, names with accents turned into strings of odd symbols, long account numbers shown in scientific notation. Converting the CSV into a real .xlsx workbook settles the delimiter and encoding once, so the person you send it to opens a sheet that already has columns, rather than a text file their spreadsheet has to interpret.
A workbook can also do what a CSV cannot. Once the data is in .xlsx, you can add formulas, formatting, filters, charts and more sheets, and save all of that in the same file.
CSV
CSV file
Comma-separated values: a plain-text table where each line is a row and commas divide the columns. It has no formulas, formatting or multiple sheets, which is exactly why databases, spreadsheets and contact tools can all import it. Delimiters and text encoding vary, so imports sometimes need a setting adjusted.

XLSX
Excel workbook
Microsoft Excel's default format since 2007, built on the Office Open XML standard. A workbook can hold several sheets with formulas, charts, formatting and data validation. Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice all open it, though some advanced features only work in Excel.

Why convertCSV is a bare text export that every program reads but none reads the same way; XLSX is a typed workbook that opens identically in Excel, Sheets and Numbers. Convert when exported data has to be analyzed, formatted or passed on to someone working in a spreadsheet.
How much data fits
CSV files have no row limit of their own; a database export can run to millions of lines. An Excel worksheet does have one, set by Microsoft and shown below. A CSV with more lines than that cannot fit on one sheet, and Excel itself warns when it opens such a file and drops the rest.
Most exports are far smaller, but large logs, transaction histories and analytics dumps can exceed it. If yours does, split the CSV into parts first, or load it into a database or a tool built for large data rather than a spreadsheet.

From Microsoft's Excel specifications and limits. The CSV format itself, described in RFC 4180, sets no limit.
Delimiters, quotes and encodings
The CSV format is less standard than its name suggests. RFC 4180 describes commas between fields and double quotes around any value that contains a comma, a quote or a line break, but many programs write their own variants. Countries that use the comma as a decimal mark often export with semicolons; database tools like tabs; some systems use pipes. Auto detect looks at the file and picks the separator it actually uses, and you can set it by hand under Advanced settings if a file is unusual.
Encoding is the other trap. A file saved as UTF-8 keeps every language intact, while an older export may use a regional code page. If names come out wrong, choose the matching Text encoding and convert again; the workbook then stores the text correctly for good.
Check one row with accents and one long number in the workbook. If both look right, the rest of the file will too.
Cleaning the data on the way in
Exports often carry invisible problems, such as spaces after a product code or before a surname, which make lookups and filters fail later. This page has Trim spaces switched on, so those are removed from the start and end of every value during conversion. Dates can be left as they are or rewritten in one format under Dates, which helps when a file mixes day-first and month-first dates.
For other directions, the Data Converter turns spreadsheets into CSV, JSON, XML or SQL, and an Excel file can become a printable PDF with XLSX to PDF. Contact exports from phones arrive as vCard files, which VCF to CSV turns into rows; for a quick table from a web page, use HTML to XLSX.
The sheet in each new workbook is called Sheet1 unless you type another name under Sheet name, up to 31 characters. Naming it after the export, such as the month or the account, makes the file easier to recognize once several workbooks are open side by side.
How to convert CSV to XLSX
Add the CSV files
Drop .csv files on the box above, or press Choose Files. Tab-separated .tsv and .txt exports work as well.
Let the delimiter be detected
Auto detect reads commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes. Under Advanced settings, set the encoding if accented letters look wrong.
Convert and download
Press Convert to XLSX, then open the workbook in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
CSV to XLSX questions
Why does Excel put my whole CSV into one column?
Excel guessed the wrong delimiter. Many European programs write CSV files with semicolons, because the comma is their decimal mark, and Excel set to another region expects commas. Converting here detects the delimiter from the file itself, so each value lands in its own column.
Will leading zeros in ZIP codes or phone numbers be kept?
Opening a CSV directly in Excel often turns 00123 into 123, because Excel guesses the cell type. In a converted workbook you can check the column before sharing it; if zeros are missing, the source CSV most likely lost them already, and a fresh export with the numbers in quotes fixes it.
What happens to the first row?
With First row is header on, the first line becomes the header row of the sheet. Turn it off under Advanced settings if your file starts directly with data.
My CSV has accented letters that come out garbled.
The file is not in the encoding the converter expected. Most files today are UTF-8; older Windows exports are often Windows-1252. Pick the right one under Text encoding and convert again.
Can I convert several CSV files into one workbook?
Each CSV becomes its own workbook with one sheet. To combine them, open the workbooks and copy the sheets into one file, or merge the CSV files before converting.
What is the difference between XLSX and XLS?
XLSX is the current Excel format, used since Excel 2007; XLS is the older binary format. Choose XLSX unless someone still uses Excel 2003 or earlier.
