300 DPI is the print standard for passport photos; a 35×45 mm photo is then 413×531 px.
Place several copies on a 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo print or an A4 page, ready for a photo kiosk or home printer.

What "passport size" usually means
In much of the world, "passport size photo" means a portrait 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall. India's passport instructions describe exactly that box, 4.5 cm by 3.5 cm, and the UK, the Schengen countries and many others use the same print size. Schools, banks, employers and exam boards borrow it for their own forms, which is why so many applications simply ask for "two passport size photographs" without giving numbers.
The United States and a few other countries are the exception: their passport photo is a 2 × 2 inch square. Canada uses a larger 50 × 70 mm print. If a form names a country or a document, choose that document in the tool; if it only says passport size, 35 × 45 mm is the safe reading.
| Size | Centimeters | Millimeters | Pixels at 300 dpi | Long edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 2.54 | 25.4 | 300 | |
| 2 in | 5.08 | 50.8 | 600 | |
| 4 in | 10.16 | 101.6 | 1200 | |
| 5 in | 12.7 | 127 | 1500 | |
| 6 in | 15.24 | 152.4 | 1800 | |
| 8 in | 20.32 | 203.2 | 2400 |
Millimeters, inches and pixels
Printed photos are measured in millimeters or inches, digital ones in pixels, and the link between them is the resolution. At 300 dots per inch, the standard for photo prints, one inch is 300 pixels, so a 35 × 45 mm photo becomes 413 × 531 pixels and a 2 × 2 inch photo becomes 600 × 600. The table above shows the same arithmetic for common inch sizes, including the 4 × 6 inch print used for photo sheets.
You can change the resolution under File size & DPI if a form asks for something else, and the pixel size follows. The printed size stays 35 × 45 mm either way, provided the printer is set to actual size rather than fit to page.
How to make passport size photos
Upload a portrait
Add a sharp, front-facing photo with your head and shoulders in frame, taken against a plain light wall.
Check size and sheet
35 × 45 mm and an A4 sheet with 8 copies are preset. Pick another document or change the number of copies under Advanced settings.
Download and print
Save the single photo for online forms and the A4 sheet for printing, then cut along the guide lines.
Passport size photo questions
What is passport size in pixels?
A 35 × 45 mm photo at 300 dpi, the usual print resolution, is 413 × 531 pixels, and that is the size this tool saves. Some online forms ask for a different pixel size; follow the form's own instruction where it has one.
How many passport size photos fit on an A4 sheet?
This page places eight copies with cut lines between them. You can raise or lower it under Copies in Advanced settings.
Can I print the sheet on a home printer?
For school forms, gym cards and similar uses, a good inkjet on photo paper is fine. For an Indian passport application it is not: the Passport Seva instructions say photographs in computer print are not accepted, so have it printed at a photo lab.
Which background color should I use?
White suits most passport and visa photos, and India's instructions ask for plain white. Some authorities accept light gray and a few forms ask for blue; set Background to match. Where an authority forbids edited photos, choose Keep original and shoot against a plain wall.
Can I make a 2 × 2 inch photo instead?
Yes. Choose US passport & visa — 2×2 in in the document list, and the crop, pixel size and head guide switch to the US rules described on the US passport photo page.
My form says the photo must be under a certain size in KB.
Turn on Limit file size under File size & DPI and type the limit. The photo is saved at the highest quality that stays under it.
Everything the maker can do
The tool is built around one task: turning an ordinary portrait into a photo that an office will accept. It finds the face, places it at the height the chosen document requires and crops the rest. The options below cover the cases that come up most often; all of them live in the tool above, and the defaults on this page are set for a 35 × 45 mm photo on an A4 sheet.
Up to 20 photos can be processed in one batch, which helps when a family needs photos for several applications at once. Each person's photo gets its own file and its own print sheet, and every file is deleted from the server 30 minutes after it is ready.
- 27 document sizes
- Passports, visas and exam photos from the US, UK, Canada, India, Schengen countries, Australia and more, plus a custom size in mm, inches or pixels.
- Background
- White, light gray or blue replaces the wall behind you; Keep original leaves the photo unedited for authorities that require it.
- Print sheets
- Several copies on an A4 page or a 4 × 6 in photo print, with thin cut lines between them.
- Head guide
- Shows the chin-to-crown band the document requires while you adjust the crop by hand.
- File size limit
- Keeps the photo under a KB limit, and over a minimum where a form sets one.
- JPG or PNG
- JPG for online forms, which nearly all ask for it; PNG for print services that request it.
Getting a photo that is accepted
A tool can fix the size and the crop; the photo itself has to be right. Ask someone else to take it, from a little distance, with your face straight to the camera and evenly lit from the front. Keep a natural, closed-mouth expression, remove glasses if there is glare, and make sure hair does not cover your eyes. India's instructions, like most others, also ask for a plain background, no shadows and both edges of the face visible.
Official passport offices often have stricter rules than a school form, including how recent the photo must be and how it must be printed. For India, see Indian passport photo size; for babies, the baby passport photo page; and for the full list of documents, the Passport Photo Maker. To cut a photo to a free shape instead, use Crop Image.
