In short

  1. 1Each object in a JSON array becomes one table row.
  2. 2Object keys become the column headers.
  3. 3The result is a plain HTML file that opens in any browser.
  4. 4JSON Lines files with one record per line convert the same way.

Data for machines, tables for people

JSON is how most software exchanges data today. Web APIs return it, apps export settings and records in it, analytics tools offer it as a download, and many no-code platforms store their tables in it behind the scenes. It is compact and precise, and for anyone who is not a developer it is hard to read: a wall of braces, quotes and commas where a simple list of rows was expected.

An HTML table shows the same records as rows and columns that a browser lays out neatly. That is useful whenever data has to be seen rather than processed: sharing a list of orders with a colleague, checking an API response during testing, putting a small dataset on an intranet page, or attaching a readable report to an email.

Because the output is a single .html file with no scripts, it opens offline on any computer or phone and looks the same everywhere. It can also be printed straight from the browser, or saved as a PDF from the print dialog when a fixed copy is needed.

JSON

JSON file

JavaScript Object Notation, a text format Douglas Crockford popularized in the early 2000s. It stores nested objects, lists, numbers and strings in a form that people and programs can both read. APIs, apps and configuration files use it widely, but spreadsheets need a conversion step to show it as a table.

  • Open standard

HTML

HTML page

HyperText Markup Language, created by Tim Berners-Lee and now maintained as a living standard by WHATWG. An HTML file describes a web page's text, links and structure, with images and styles usually stored separately. Any browser opens it, and it can also serve as an email template or a saved copy of a page.

  • Open standard

Why convertJSON stores records in a structure that programs parse easily and people struggle to read; the HTML table lays the same records out in rows that any browser displays. Convert when data from an API or export needs to be looked at, shared or published, not processed.

The shape that works

A table needs records that share the same fields, and JSON's most common shape provides exactly that: an array of objects. The converter reads each object as a row and collects the keys into the header, so a key missing from one object simply leaves that cell empty. The example below is the kind of input that gives a clean two-column table, with name and city as headers.

API responses often wrap the list inside an outer object, such as a data or results field next to paging details. In that case, open the file in a text editor, copy just the array between its square brackets into a new file and convert that, so the rows come from the records themselves rather than from the wrapper.

JSON Lines files follow the same rule with less punctuation: each line is one object, and each line becomes one row. Logs and data pipelines often produce this shape, and it converts without any change.

A standard both sides understand

JSON and HTML are both open standards, which is why the conversion is predictable. JSON's grammar is fixed by the IETF in RFC 8259: strings in double quotes, numbers, true, false, null, objects and arrays, nothing else. HTML tables are defined by the HTML Living Standard, with header and data cells that every browser renders the same way.

A strict grammar also means a strict reader. A JSON file with a trailing comma or comments in it is not valid JSON, even though some tools accept it, and the converter stops with an error rather than guessing what was meant.

2017

The year the IETF published RFC 8259, the current JSON specification.

It replaced earlier RFCs and aligns with the Ecma standard ECMA-404, so files that follow it parse the same in every language.

When another format fits better

HTML is the right target when people will read the data. If they will work with it, sort it or total it, a spreadsheet is better: the Data Converter turns the same JSON into XLSX, CSV or other formats. If the data started on a web page and you want it in Excel, HTML to XLSX goes the other way. Contact lists exported as vCards have their own route in VCF to CSV.

Files of up to 95 MB and up to 20 at a time are accepted. Very large arrays make very long tables, which browsers can still open but people rarely read, so for big exports consider filtering the records first. Everything you upload is deleted after processing, and the HTML files are removed 30 minutes after they are ready.

How to convert JSON to HTML

  1. Add the JSON file

Drop a .json file on the box above, or press Choose Files. JSON Lines files (.jsonl, .ndjson) work too.

  2. Keep headers on

HTML is selected and First row is header is on, so the keys of your objects become the column titles.

  3. Convert and open

Press Convert to HTML, download the file and open it in any browser, or paste the table into a page.

JSON to HTML questions

What JSON shape converts best to an HTML table?

An array of objects with the same keys, such as a list of orders or users. Each object becomes a row and each key a column. A single object, or an array of plain values, gives a one-row or one-column table.

What happens to nested objects and arrays?

A table has rows and columns but no levels, so deeply nested data does not map onto it neatly. Flat records give the clearest result; for nested data, consider flattening the fields you need before converting, or keep the JSON for code and convert only a summary.

Is the HTML file styled?

It is a plain, standards-based table that browsers show with simple borders. Because the markup is clean, you can add your own CSS or paste it into a page builder, email template or content system.

Can I open the result in Excel?

Excel can open an HTML table, but if a spreadsheet is the goal, convert the JSON to XLSX directly with the Data Converter page; you get real cells, types and sheets.

My JSON file will not convert. What is wrong?

Usually the file is not valid JSON: a trailing comma, single quotes instead of double quotes or a missing bracket. Open it in a code editor or a JSON validator, fix the line it points to and try again.

Does the table escape HTML inside my data?

Text values are written as text, so characters such as < and & in your data appear as they are instead of being treated as markup.
